THE MUSIC TRADE REVIEW
AFRICAN AND PHILIPPINE MAHOGANY
Texture of the Two Woods Is Practically the
Same, But African Mahogany Is Harder to
Work—Philippine Wood Less Expensive
Mahogany is found more or less in abundance
throughout the tropical zone. It is only a very,
short time since the only mahogany used in any
quantity was brought from Santo Domingo, but
as time wore on and mahogany came into more
general favor, the stock was brought from other
points, until today African wood is more
generally used than any other. The beauty of
African mahogany is found in its figure and in
the texture of the wood. It is easily worked,
and will probably always be in demand for the
higher grades of furniture, such as dining tables,
dressers and all case goods. However, in chair
work this mahogany is not used, Cuban ma-
hogany being substituted on account of its ex-
treme hardness. African wood is considered
to be too soft to stand the strain of hard knocks
to which a chair is subjected. The one serious
defect found in African mahogany is the cross
or wind break. This is caused by the storms
which frequently occur in the African forests,
causing the trees to bend and split internally.
Although this causes no real harm to the grow-
ing tree, the injury is brought out in the lum-
ber as a defect when the forest giant is eventual-
ly felled for commercial uses. Philippine ma-
hogany, we are informed, does not contain this
defect, although it does to some extent contain

small worm or beetle holes. However, these
holes do not affect the value of the wood in any
way because they are little larger than a pin
head, and the use of a good paste filler oblit-
erates them. Philippine mahogany, when these
holes have been filled, takes an excellent and
lasting finish.
The wood is of two colors, light red, which is
slightly lighter in color than the Mexican ma-
hogany, and dark red, which is of the same color
as Mexican or African mahogany. However,
since all woods are stained, this does not have
any effect on the finished product.
The texture of Philippine mahogany is prac-
tically identical with African mahogany, being,
if anything, more easily worked than the latter,
which has a tendency to cross grain. The
Philippine mahogany has more or less of a
straight grain, and therefore is more readily
worked. It can be surfaced, scraped, sanded
and finished to look equally as well as any ma-
hogany now on the market, and the cost is
considerably lower than African or Honduras
woods.

Domestic Buying Gains Considerable Impetus
With Prices Still Holding High
Domestic buying of copper for third-quarter
delivery has gained considerable impetus in the
last fortnight, with the big producers in the
market at prices reported from 2>2y 2 to 33 cents
a pound. While no purchases on a large scale
have yet been made, the demand is expected
to expand quickly with definite developments in
the country's relations with Germany. Con-
sumers are apparently waiting to see whether
the submarine campaign works to reduce ex-
ports, the theory being that if oversea shipments
are reduced prices for copper to be delivered
later in the year may ease off. Copper men say
that so far no evidence has appeared that the
metal movement has been checked. Informal
negotiations for further sales to foreign govern-
ments have been under way for some time with
no definite results so far disclosed.
