REMICK GETS MELON WITH CREAM.
The Detroit Creamery Co., of Which Jerome H.
Remick, the Prominent Music Publisher, Is
President, Declares Fifty Per Cent. Stock
Dividend and Doubles Capital Stock.
The term, "enjoying the cream of life," is par-
ticularly apropos in the case of Jerome H. Remick,
the president of Jerome H. Remick & Co., music
publishers, and likewise president and general man-
ager of the Detroit Creamery Co., Detroit, Mich.
At the annual meeting of the creamery company
held last week the stockholders, on a recommenda-
tion from the directors, voted to increase the com-
pany's capital stock from $800,000 to $1,600,000,
and to declare a stock dividend of 50 per cent., or
$400,000.
The remaining $400,000 of new stock will be re-
tained in the treasury. Mr. Remick was re-elected
president and general manager at the meeting, the
other officers being F. P. Byrne and A. A. Schantz,
vice-presidents; F. W. Ullrich, secretary and treas-
urer; Alfred Easter, assistant to the president, and
N. J. Dessert, superintendent.

Wm. Wade Hinshaw Wants to Make Oper-
atic Enterprises Self-Sustaining in Smaller
Cities and Announces Liberal Offer.
Plans are now under way for making a strong
appeal to Congress to have John Philip Sousa
created a lieutenant of marines in recognition of
his work in connection with "American-made"
music. For twelve years Mr. Sousa was conductor
of the United States Marine Band, but never was
accorded the rank that should go with that position,
although he has been decorated by several European
sovereigns. In addition to composing a score of
marches of world-wide popularity, Mr. Sousa has
written and had produced seven comic operas. His
band during the past fifteen years has toured Eu-
rope five times, made a circuit of the world and
traveled in all 700,000 miles without accident. At
the present time Sousa and his band are filling a
long engagement with "Hip, Hip, Hooray" at the
New York Hippodrome.
Hoping to make operatic enterprises self-sustain-
ing in smaller cities by producing works written on
a miniature scale, William Wade Hinshaw, the
American baritone, has offered a $1,000 prize, with
the addition of a royalty, for the best opera, with-
out chorus, written for a cast of not more than
fifteen principal singers, and an orchestra of not
more than twenty-five players. He agrees to pro-
duce the opera adequately, or cause it to be pro-
duced, within one year from the time of awarding
the prize. The intention is to keep it continuously
before the public. A veteran of metropolitan ex-
perience himself, Mr. Hinshaw believes that self-
sustaining opera for the smaller cities will only be
possible through "keeping down the expense."
"The Princess Tra-la-la," the new Viennese
operetta, or rather the English version of "Hoheit
Tanzt Waltzer," which has enjoyed a most suc-
cessful run at the Irving Place Theatre, New York,
had its premiere in Jersey City on Monday eve-
ning under the management of Andreas Dippel,
and was well received. The music of the piece is
by Leo Asher and the libretto and lyrics by
Matthew Woodward. The Karczag Publishing
Co. publishes the music.
