If American exporters will try to do business
with Argentina merchants along the lines on which
European exporters have carried on commerce
with them, there is no reason why the United
States should not get the lion's share of Argen-
tinian trade, in the opinion of N. Sichirich, a prom-
inent importer of Buenos Aires, who, with his wife
and daughter, has been at the Waldorf-Astoria
Hotel. Otherwise, according to Mr. Sichirich,
the business obtained from Argentina on account
of the war will go back to England, Germany and
France after peace has been restored.
"I believe the Argentine Republic offers very
large opportunities for your manufacturers and
exporters," said Mr. Sichirich this week, "if your
commercial people adopt the same system of doing
business that European houses have practised. But
it is really necessary that you come to those terms.
The merchants of Argentina are not favoring any
one country. They are patronizing that part of the
world where they can get the goods they want on
the best terms.
"The talk of a direct steamship line from New
York to Buenos Aires is old. People who are
fathering such projects are looking to get Govern-
ment subventions, but I do not believe they will
succeed. Of course, everybody in business would
like to get faster ships and cheaper rates, but the
governments, particularly the American Govern-
ment, has failed to show any interest in the enter-
prise.
"Business done with Argentina has to be done on
credit. I have been in the habit of giving my cus-
tomers six or eight months and at times even
twelve. Here you ask too much. You practically
expect the money as soon as the goods are put on
the ship. The war may force some Argentinian
merchants to buy in the United States commodities
they have been accustomed to get abroad, but if
you would keep this trade you must give long
credits. Trade seeks the easiest channels."
