PIANO STOOL IMPROVEMENTS.
PIANO HOUSE TO MAKE GUN STOCKS?
BIG ORDER FOR PIANO PLATES.
Progress in the Perfection of This Important
Auxiliary to the Piano Is Evidently Not
Overlooked in the Forward Trend in Im-
provements—Receives Too Little Attention.
Rumored That Cote Piano Manufacturing Co.
Will Accept Contract Offered by New York
Brokerage Firm—Not Confirmed, However.
Secured by the Brazil Trust Co., Receiver for
the Knight-Brinkerhoff Piano Co.—Large
Force of Molders Put to Work at Once.
A well-known piano manufacturer and dealer,
speaking of the many improvements made on
pianos and organs in the past few years, has said
that with all the self-playing attachments, or-
chestral additions and tone improvements, one of
the most important movements made for playing a
piano has been that to which one would probably
give the last thought. And it has been the p'ano
stool. Piano manufacturers, he says, have now
almost universally relegated the uncomfortable
swivel-seated chair of other days to the scrap heap,
and in its place have introduced a comfortable
bench-like seat that has met with instant and popu-
lar approval, even among the virtuosos, who used
the old revolving seat type, often for effect upon
the r concert audiences, either by wheeling sud-
denly about or spending many minutes, sometimes,
in adjusting their seat to the proper height. Tn
speaking of the change, the dealer said: "And
to think that all the time they were making the
other marvelous improvements on the piano we
went right ahead suffering all sorts of discomfort
with the old stools, whose glass knobs in the legs
always kept them shifting. Though it was one of
he simplest improvements to be made, it was one
A the tardiest in coming, due probably to that
ver-present human trait of abiding by custom."
A GENUINE MYTH.
The dealer in antiques was showing an old violin
o a probable buyer.
"Yes," he said, "this is of historical interest;
iat is the identical fiddle Nero played while Rome
ras burning."
"Oh, that is a myth!"
The dealer agreed, saying:
"Yes, it is; and Myth's name was on it, but it
las got worn off."—Philadelphia Record.

FALL RIVER, MASS., October 11.—It is possible
that a large war order of gun stocks will be made
in this city shortly, the Cote Piano Mfg. Co.,
of 481 Alden street, having been approached by
a New York brokerage firm with a view to having
the local firm take over the order. When asked
about the matter, Edmond Cote, president of the
local organization, said that his company had been
approached by the New York concern, though
the offer had not been accepted. Mr. Cote fur-
ther said that this was a busy season in the piano
business, and his company might not accept the
New York proposition.
Tt was rumored several days ago in the eastern
section of the city that the Cote company was
making gun stocks, and that two carloads had
been shipped away. The company is equipped
with machinery to turn out the gun stocks.
VENEER AND PANEL MEN TO MEET.
THE COPPER MARKET.
New
(Special to The Review.)
HRAZIL, IND., October 11.—Secretary Carpenter,
of the Brazil Trust Co., which is receiver for the
Knight-Brinkerhoff Piano Co., announced this
afternoon that he had just closed a contract for
four carloads of piano plates, which are to be
supplied to a big piano house.
The contract calls for 600 piano plates, and the
receiver will put a large force of molders to work
in the foundry at once manufacturing the plates.
It is expected that at least twenty molders will be
put to work at once in manufacturing the piano
plates.
Secretary Carpenter stated that it would require.
at least two months to fill this order, and that'
indications for business in the future were good;
and that a prosperous season at the plant was
expected.

Inquiries Indicate Need of Considerable
Metal.
There was a new inquiry for copper in this
market early this week, and judging from the size
of individual inquiries there still remains a con-
siderable amount of copper to be bought for de-
livery before the end of the year. Some business
was done at IS 1 /! cents a pound, which now seems
to be a quite general quotation, except where metal
is pressed for sale by small interests.
TRADE EXTENSION DEPARTMENT.
The National Lumber Manufacturers' Associa-
tion, with headquarters in Chicago, has established
a trade extension department, the purpose of which
is to assist in increasing sales of lumber and wood
products. A series of bulletins for the architect,
contractor and engineer will be prepared, while
informative literature for the consumer is also to
be issued. The co-operation of retail dealers is to
be sought.
The annual meeting of the National Veneer and
Panel Manufacturers' Association will be held in
the Auditorium Hotel, Chicago, 111., Tuesday and
Wednesday, December 14 and 15. The committee
appointed to care for the interests of veneer and
panel manufacturers before the Interstate Com-
merce Commission in the matter of classification
rates will probably have a report to make.
There will be the usual number of talks by spe-
cialists on subjects interesting to the members and
the usual banquet. As the bi-annual election of
officers occurs at this meeting, there will be a large
attendance.
ACTION COMPANY INCORPORATES.
The Perfect Player Action Co., New York, has
been incorporated with capital stock of $5,000 to
manufacture piano actions and musical instru-
ments. The incorporators are: Anton Zirgler, Ed--
ward J. Malier and Alex Zeitlin.
