Factors That
Have Made Possible the Quick Success of House of Trefz—Products Have Won
a Reputation for Quality— Two Years of Rapid Progress.
Piano string making is a peculiar industry; first,
it is a specialized one, and second, the nature of
the business restricts the volume of work and con-
sequently the number of people engaged in string
making is limited. It has always been considered
that the long-established houses were sufficient in
number to care for the business, but two young
concentration is the keynote of any enterprise, Otto
R., Jr., handled the distribution end, while Edwin
A. devoted his time to the manufacturing, although
frequent consultations gave each full information
as to what happened in both departments.
The policy was to make nothing but "quality
strings," and as the weeks passed the volume of

which will greatly increase their output as well as
the prestige of the Trefz string.
Accompanying this article are recent photographs
taken in the Trefz factory, the top illustration be-
ing a section of the spinning room, underneath
which is the looping room, the bottom view being
that of the storeroom. In the latter are stored
thousands of pounds of wire, it being the aim of
Mr. Trefz to always have a large amount of wire
should emergencies arise, for this concern makes
a specialty, among other things, of making prompt
("eliveries on specified periods, which is a feature
of their service that is of vital importance to
smooth manufacturing operations.
That the Trefz boys fully understand how to
overcome the difficulties of good piano string mak-
ing is explained by the fact that for many years
they were at the factory of the Lester Piano Co.,
Lester, Pa., where, under the training of their
father, Otto R. Trefz, the superintendent, they ac-
quired a vast fund of information and knowledge
that stands them exceptionally well in the making
and marketing of Trefz piano strings.

men didn't believe in the usual run of commercial
deductions, and thought that the piano manufac-
turers needed a Trefz quality of strings.
So it was with this thought that the house of
Trefz was started about two years ago by Otto R.
Trefz, Jr., associating with him in the move-
ment his brother, Edwin A. Trefz. Knowing that
business gradually increased, until to-day the con-
cern is furnishing strings to manufacturers located
in all parts of the country. In the West and East
it evidently didn't take long to prove the Trefz
string quality, and a trial order generally was fol-
lowed by contracts. And the Trefz brothers are
just as eager to-day for business and have plans

ing of General Business—Optimistic Over
Fall Outlook—Shortage in Supplies.
G. H. Vaughan, Eastern representative of the
Ohio Veneer Co., 2624 Colerain avenue, Cincin-
nati, O., with headquarters at the New York Fur-
niture Exchange, Forty-sixth street and Lexington
avenue, has returned from a visit to Cincinnati,
where he was for several days in consultation
with President Ferdinand Bosken and other offi-
cers of the organization. Mr. Vaughan reports a
fairly substantial volume of business being pre-
dicted for the coming few months, and as for the
period of 1914 just passed, he reports decidedly
increased sales.
"There is a decided scarcity of Circassian wal-
nut," Mr. Vaughan added, "and inasmuch as our
stock of this class of wood is large, due to our
foresight in seeing that our supply is big, we have
had unusual Circassian sales. It is evident that
there is a good-sized increase in the production of
Circassian case pianos, which shows that the trend
in piano distribution is to larger sales and better
ones."
