Manufacturer the Inventor of an Improved Means for Mounting the Fal'board to
Prevent It Becoming Wedged in Side Grooves When Being Operated.
(Special to The Review.)
WASHINGTON, D. C, April 20.—William L. Bjur,
of New York, has just been granted Patent No.
1,092,970 on an Improved Means for Mounting the
Fallboard of Pianos, or the cover or lid which is
employed to protect the keys of the instrument
when the same is not in use.
Usually the fallboard has been hinged so that it
swings forward and back in or out of action, but
in some cases it has been attempted to mount the
board so that the main part thereof slides back
and forth on rails, attached to the side arms, said
main part carrying a hinged section which falls
over the ends of the keys. This la'ter arrange-
ment is attended by the •difficulty of keeping the
sliding section square between the rails or tracks so
that it will slide true and easily. Tn other words,
the tendency has been to cramp or bind the sliding
section and thereby prevent its easy movement.
This invention seeks to overcome this disadvantage,
and to this end Mr. Bjur employs a peculiar device
for holding the fallboard even in its rails and in-
suring its easy movement, which device is s?t forth
in the claims herewith.
1. A piano case having a sliding fallboard with
grooves in the ends thereof, rails received in the
grooves in the ends of the board and adjustable
runners set in the ends of the fallboard at the bases
of the grooves to engage the rails for the purpose
specified.
2. A piano case having a sliding fallboard with
grooves in the ends thereof, rails received in the
grooves in the ends of the board and screws con-
stituting adjustable runners set in the ends of the
fallboard at the bases of the grooves to engage the
rails for the purpose specified.

In line with its policy of advancement, the Ohio
Veneer Co., Cincinnati, O., of which William Bos-
ken is president, recently established Eastern head-
quarters for display and sales purposes at the Grand
Central Palace, Lexington avenue and Forty-sixth
street, New York. This Eastern territory is under
the charge of G. II. Vaughan, an experienced
veneer man, who has a wide acquaintance in the
trade, and since he has been able to show the quali-
ties of the veneer and foreign woods by an actual
and permanent display he has succeeded in ma-
terially increasing the business of the house.
The specialties of the Ohio Veneer Co. are Cir-
cassian walnut, figured mahogany, bird's-eye
maple, curly birch, figured walnut, quartered oak,
rosewood and all kinds of plain rotary cut stoc'<.
The company imports and manufactures and thus
is able to minimize manufacturing costs, which
with the quality of products makes the line a de-
sirable one from many standpoints.

\Y. VA.. April 22.—One of
the
busiest concerns in this territory is the Central
Veneer Co., which is operating its factories over-
time in order to meet the demand for its soft yel-
low poplar veneers, for which this house is having
an increasing call throughout the piano trade.
The choice assortment handled and the close at-
tention paid to orders placed with this establish-
ment by piano manufacturers have brought about
an increased appreciation of not only the products,
but also the policy of this house. There is no
Southern hardwood in greater favor to-day with
high-class cabinet manufacturers and critical piano
makers than yellow poplar; in fact, it ranks next
to oak. Its great strength and toughness arc
qualities which have appealed to users of wotuls,
as well as the readiness with which it takes varnish
and other finishes.
