GLUE AND THE SPLASH LINE.
Lumber and Veneers
One of the Annoying Difficulties Met with In
Handling Oak Veneers—Holding Qualities of
Cut and Sawn Veneers Compared.
There is a peculiar, hard, flaky line in oak, called
the splash line—the thing that makes the figure
sought after in quartered oak—which sometimes
gives trouble in veneering, and in giving this trou-
ble it raises the question, Is it a matter of the glue
failing to stick to it well, or something else? It
is hard and slick, which immediately suggests that
glue will not adhere to it as well as to other parts
of the same wood. One man says that in using
sliced veneer it is advisable to tooth or roughen the
surface before gluing, so that it will hold well,
pointing out at the same time that occasionally
sliced veneer will go shelly, whereas sawed stock
never does, for the reason that there is the rough-
ness or fuzz of the saw cutting to hold the glue.
This is good reasoning, too, and it is unquestion-
ably true that, as a rule, sawed veneer will hold
better than cut veneer. There is room for some
argument, though, whether this is all a matter of
the glue sticking to the sawed surface better, or
whether part of it is due to some shelling or rup-
turing of the grain in slicing.
We know that the fibers of the wood are dis-
turbed a little in cutting. Also, those who are fa-

miliar with veneer slicing know that it is impossi-
ble to split a splash line with a knife. The knife
will cut under it so far ,and then cut through; and,
no matter how sharp, it will not split a flake or
splash line through the middle. This causes some
shelling around this hard line in the wood; and at
times, when the finished work goes shelly, it may be
due to this rather than to the glue not holding to
the splash line, says a writer in Veneers.

One good way, for those who like to experiment,
to test this matter out would be to take some quar-
ter-sawed oak veneer with a good, broad splash
line, clean oft the inner face, and then glue it on.
Or, if it happens to be a case where it is a planing
mill making some veneer by resawing lumber,
smoothing it down with the planer will lay bare the
smooth splash line. Try this just as it comes from
the planer, and then try the same stock sanded off
to give a toothed effect, and it will tell the story of
which holds best, and of whether or not one should
sand sliced veneer on the inner side before gluing
it up to get a better job.
