turers of Grand Rapids, Mich., are experiencing a
place, New York, is "La Roma," which is im- very large degree of activity, the demand for their
products being at the present time unprecedented.
This may be attributed in a large measure to the
preparation being made for a lively Presidential
campaign. The triple contest will call into ser-
vice a great number of bands, and every town and
village throughout the country is burnishing up its
equipment, finding out its needs and placing or-
ders for York instruments.
One feature of the trade of J. W. York & Sons
is the call for instruments by soloists, which in-
cludes some of the most notable in the country,
and who speak in the most complimentary terms
regarding the musical merits of the York products.
CARE IN TESTING STRINGS.
A VALUABLE STRAD.
One of the Many Reasons Why the Schindler
Product Has Grown in Popularity.
A violincello was knocked down at a recent auc-
tion sale in London for $1,800. It was by Nicholas
Gagliano. made in 1761, after a Stradivarius model,
orange-brown varnish. Another old violoncello,
made by Guadagnini, was sold for $875. Among
the violins sold was a Stradivarius, with two silver
mounted bows, which brought $2,000.

The combined mixture of dry and damp weather
during the surrftner months is one of the hardest
things that string jobbers, dealers and users have
to contend with. To secure a string that will stand
up under this bombardment of the elements is very
hard, yet this is the kind of weather that the firm
of H. Schindler & Co.. makers of gut wound music
strings, Jamaica Plain District, this city, like to
have for it tests of the Schindler strings to the last
degree. In the process of manufacture, the Schind-
ported specially by this well-known institution for
ler Co. use -every effort to have the strings made
the trade of this country. These strings are not of the best materials, and by the best workman-

Large assortments of Weiss harmonicas and
other specialities are being received at the Amer-
can headquarters of Ch. Weiss, .393 Broadway,
New York. These shipments will continue for a
couple of months yet, so as to complete a stock
sufficient to cater to the demands of fall trade.
Something new and novel in the harmonica line
is now being perfected by the Weiss house, which
it is expected will create quite a sensation in the
small goods trade when it is announced, as it
probably will be during the coming fall season.
No o#ier specialty made by the Weiss house has
hitherto equaled the "Fluta" in popularity; the
demand continues to exceed the supply and every-
where it is admired for its appearance, finish and
musical merits.
