FRANCES ALLITZEN, COMPOSER, DEAD.
"Prairie Pictures" Possesses Character That Has
Won Fame for Composer's Previous Songs.

London. She was born in that city and studied at

''The Lord Ts My Light," "The Lute Player,"
It is character which particularly distinguishes
these "Prairie Pictures"—a strange character of
romance and pathos, as if the composer had in-
fused into her weird music the sigh of an expir-
ing race. There is a touch of Dvorak's New
World Symphony in that first page of the intro-
duction, with its sullen rhythms and ejaculations.
And the mysterious suggestions of tragedy are
present as soon as the voices begin. Once having
established the character of the work, the composer
never deviates from it. Yet at the same time there
is plenty of variety in it. The numbers follow each
other without a break, and the four voices are
introduced with skill and with a proper regard
for the contrasts between them. A short prefatory
note by the poet-composer says that these songs
do not purpose to be authentic melodies, although
a few native fragments have been introduced, but
were written as a result of travels through those
parts of America where the remains of a .poetic,
if primitive, race still linger. Chappell & Co. pub-
lish the music.

MONUMENT TO MASSENET.
A subscription list for a monument to Massenet
has been started in Paris. The publishers, Heugel
et Cie, headed it with 10,000 francs. Massenet's
annual income during the last years of his life is
reported to have exceeded 700,000 francs. He be-
gan his musical career by playing the kettledrum in
a theater band.
