THE
MU3IC TRADE
story of a Corsican vendetta, centering around a
young man, Paolo, who is prevented by his parents
from marrying the young girl, Viola, whom he has
deceived. Viola's three brothers, each masked, call
upon Paolo's parents in carnival time and bring
with them a pierrot, with whom they dance, and
who, they say, is tipsy, but who in reality is the
corpse of Paolo, whom they have assassinated.
The three masqucraders depart, leaving the pier-
rot behind them. When the father tries to awake
the pierrot he withdraws his hand, dripping with
blood, and discovers the body of his own son.
The music is realistically descriptive of the
drama. This opera was enthusiastically applauded
by the Marseilles public. The next step in French
drama will be watched with interest.
