THE MUSIC TRADE
Catering to the popular demand, this company has
also brought out "I Wish I Had Another Girl,"
by Geo. A. Little and Jack Stanley, and are push-
ing it as a successor to "Gee, I Wish I Had a
Girl." This song also has the quartet arrange-
ment. "The Monkey Rag," by the Thompson Co.,
has a unique history. The composer is Chris.
Smith, colored, Smith came originally from a
southern river town and upon a recent visit to his
mother, who still resides there, caught the strain
which he afterwards developed into the song. As
Smith heard the piece it was in the chant of steam-
boat deckhands and he has preserved its original
rythm.
Another more venturesome project of Elgar's,
which his admirers still hope to see him carry out,
was inspired by his appreciation of the humor, if
not the grossness, of Rabelais, and was to have
taken the form, it was understood, of an essay in
pantomime.

he first turned his attention many years ago, now.
