"PEGGY" IN NEW YORK.
London Gaiety Theater Success Is Saved by the
Music of Leslie Stuart—Poor Comedy and
Bad Singing Weaken Production—Pros-
pects for Improvement in Cast—Chappell &
Co. Publish the Music.
"Peggy," the latest Geo. Edwardes' musical com-
edy success from the London Gaiety Theater, and
produced in this country by Thomas W. Ryley
opened at the Casino Theater, New York, on
Thursday evening of last week after several weeks
spent in other cities.
The music of '"Peggy" was composed by Les
lie Stuart, the composer of "Havana" and the
great success of some years ago, "Floradora," and
though the music of the latest show is inferior in
some respects to that of his previous triumphs,
there are several numbers that seem destined to
gain more than passing notice, among them being:
"The Lass with the Lasso," "Go Away, Little Girl,
Go Back to School," "Ladies, Beware," and "Whis-
tle and the Girls Come 'Round," all of which are
strongly featured.
The singing of the various

songs is not calculated to render them effective,
and a redistribution of the numbers in order to
place them in the hands of principals with better
voices will no doubt prove effective, for the chorus
is handsome, well gowned and can really sing,
which means a great deal in musical comedy.
"Peggy," the book of which was written by
George Grossmith, Jr., and the lyrics by C. H.
Bovill, starts out with what promisees to develop
into a real plot which but seems to meet with
discouragement, and then the fate of the piece is
given over into the none too delicate hands of
the comedians, of whom Harry Fisher, as Cecil
Custard Carruthers, and Charles Brown, as Au-
deron Blow, are the leading lights.
The music is the redeeming feature of "Peggy,"
and, together with handsome and elaborate cos-
tumes and stage effects, serves to keep the audi-
ences fairly interested.
With an excellent basis
to build upon, there is no doubt that the show
will be rearranged into a highly interesting enter-
tainment. More delicate comedy, which will not
suggest burlesque, and some really capable singers
will, together with the present attractive chorus,
music that is some better than the average and
good stage settings, do much to insure a Broadway
run for the production and also success on tour.
Chappell & Co. publish the music.

J. Tatian Roach, manager of the music depart-
ment of Hinds, Noble & Eldredge, New York,
publishers of "The Most Popular" series of folios,
states that the month of November, from every
.viewpoint, proved the best month of the year in
point of sales and with a good margin to spare.
The new additions to "The Most Popular" series
have been well received by both the trade and the
public, and orders for them are said to have been
of unusual size. John J. Mearns, the Hinds, Noble
Sc Eldredge traveler, returned last week from a
very successful trip through the Eastern States,
during which he received a number of rush or-
ders to meet the holiday demand. It is also pleas-
ing to note that the cloth-bound volumes issued
especially for use as gifts have proven highly pop-
ular and that the first edition of cloth-bound books
has already been cleaned out.
