THE
IMPORTERS WILL BE INTERESTED
In Action to be Brought by the Department of
Justice Against Transatlantic
Steamship
Companies for Violation of Sherman Anti-
Trust Law.
(Special to The Review.)
Washington, D. C, April 25, 1910.
The report that the Department of Justice is
about to begin an action against the foreign
transatlantic steamship companies for alleged
violation of the Sherman anti-trust law will in-
terest importers of musical merchandise, especial-
ly the eastern houses. It is charged these com-
panies have for a number of years maintained a
pooling arrangement under which they conduct
their business on this side of the ocean. Attor-
ney-General Wickersham
announced
several
weeks ago that such action was in contemplation,
but it was made known Saturday that the de-
partment is almost ready to prosecute.
It is alleged that the Hamburg-American, NorUi
German Lloyd, Holland-America and Red Star
lines are parties to this pool, and the importers
of small goods nave complained that the New
York firms have been grossly discriminated
against in the matter of carrying charges. Of
course, importers of toys and similar goods are
also complainants for the same cause, and when
The Review broached this matter before a con-
certed effort was made by both the musical mer-
chandise and allied lines, but without effect.
Perhaps the' Department of Justice will reveal
the inside arrangements between these great
ocean carrying companies, who maintain that as
the agreement between themselves on freight
rates was made in Europe the United States
courts have no jurisdiction. The small goods
wholesale and importing trade will watch the
outcome of these proceedings with unusual in-
terest.

PALESTINE VIOLIN.
The rebab of Palestine is a sort of violin. The
body is a square frame covered with parchment.
The instrument is played with a bow. There is
but one string, a thick, coarse horsehair, but
expert performers can, it is said, get considerable
variety of tone from this primitive instrument.
