THE TEACHER'S
An American Grand Opera in One Act by
Stanislaus Stange and Julian Edwards Is a
Brilliant Piece of Work, Says the Man on
the Street.
Had Julian Edwards never composed another
note save the music of "The Patriot" he would
be regarded as a musician of brilliancy and at-
tainment. This one-act opera is the joint work
of Mr. Edwards and Stanislaus Stange, who will
be remembered as the author of "When Johnny
Comes Marching Home" and other operas.
"The Patriot" is founded on a so-called legend,
and goes back to a plot against George Washing-
ton while his army was encamped a t Valley
Forge. According to the story, Washington goes
to the house of one, Manheim, a Tory farmer,
and is detained by a storm. He stays over night.
Manheim, with others, plot to kill Washington,
but their scheme is overheard by Manheim's
daughter, Marion, a patriot. The conspirators
draw lots and it falls to Manheim to kill Wash-
ington.
