Houston, Tex., seems to possess a trade atmos-
phere that tends to prolong the life of her busi-
ness houses if the music trade in that city can
be taken as a criterion. Thos. Goggan & Bro.
lead off with a record of forty-two years of
continued success in handling such pianos as
the Chickering, Emerson, Krell, Smith & Nixon
and others, during which time they have es-
tablished five branches in various cities in the
State.
Next on the list comes the J. W. Carter Music
Co., with a business career of thirty-one years
to their credit, their success being due largely
to the personal efforts of the officers of the com-
pany, J. W. Carter, president; E. W. Hutchinson,
vice-president; J. H. B. House, treasurer, and
J. R. Carter, secretary. This house handle the
Schaeffer, Hardman, Vose & Sons and Harring-
ton pianos as well as Estey organs.
In comparison with the two preceding houses
the Janke Music Co. seem like an infant, though
having experienced fifteen years of business suc-
cess, their success in a large measure being
traceable to the careful direction of Chas. E.
Soloman, president of the company. They are
located at 615 Main street, where the following
line of pianos is handled: Estey, Conover,
Strohber and others.
FACTORIES MUST BE LOOKED AFTER.
The New York State Commissioner of Labor,
John Williams, is on the warpath against fac-
tories that are not properly ventilated, and states
that there are actions aggregating $4,300 already
commenced against firms who have failed to
properly ventilate their factory buildings, es-
pecially in winter, windows being opened in
summer without question. Mr. Williams is also
after violations of the child labor laws, and re-
garding various violations has the following to
say:
