THE VOSE PATENT KEY BASE
An Invention Which Is Designed to Overcome
Adverse Atmospheric Changes—An Import-
ant Adjunct to the Vose Piano.
American inventive spirit has never halted
upon successes won, but has ever sought heights
further on. It has been that spirit of restless
enterprise, of strong ambition, that desire to do
things, which has made the American piano the
standard of the world, and to those men who
have added luster to American skill we owe
much.
Take the house of Vose for instance. For
fifty-seven years the Vose policy has been un-
broken. It has been one of continued advance-
ment, of constant study and effort to make per-
fect every detail of the Vose piano.
There could be but one result to such devoted
effort, and that is the steady advance in the
estimation of music lovers of pianos bearing the
name of Vose. Vose pianos possess individual
characteristics. They have a singing quality
which is vibrant and appeals with irresistible
force to music lovers. Vose construction has al-
ways been remarkable for its mechanical per-
fection and wonderful durability, each part be-
ing carefully made, and all the parts combined
into a perfect whole.
Naturally, when a house with such a distin-
guished career announces the advent of a new
invention, such an announcement at once at-
tracts interest, because the Vose policy is never
to make an announcement of any accomplish-
ment until their inventions have been subjected
to all possible tests. Hence the introduction of
the Vose Patent Key Base, as an exclusive fea-
ture of Vose pianos, is of interest to the trade
and public.
What is this new Vose device—this latest
achievement of the famous old Boston house?
The Vose Patent Key Base is designed with
a view of producing a key base that should suc-
cessfully withstand all atmospheric changes, so
that the adjustment of the keys should not be
disturbed by any warping or twisting which
might be caused on account of extreme varia-
tions of temperature.
The Vose Patent Key Base is constructed of
strips of wood with spaces between, the strips
being united by narrow blocks properly ar-
ranged. Such construction and arrangement
make ample provision for the contraction and
expansion caused by moisture, etc., without in
the least affecting the adjustment of the keys.
The introduction of this new feature, which
is incorporated exclusively in the Vose piano,
marks another distinct advance for the house
of Vose, and proves conclusively that this con-
cern is not content to rest upon past accomplish-
ments but that the Vose forces are ever active,
intent upon creating further developments in
piano making along scientific lines.

Future Plans of New Consolidation—Pianos

Buffalo, N. Y., May 18, 1908.
The Buffalo Music Co. have moved into their
new and larger quarters at 632-634 Main street,
the store formerly occupied by the Grohs Piano
Co. As was announced in The Review previ-
ously, C. F. Kurtzmann, the dealer of 664 Main
street, recently consolidated his business with
that of the Buffalo Music Co., and hereafter
the business of the two stores will be carried
on at the new address under the name of the
Buffalo Music Co., with Herbert Higginbottom
as manager and C. F . Kurtzmann as sales
manager.
The company have just received a large num-
ber of new pianos 'from the factories, including
such makes as the Ivers & Pond, French & Sons
and Lagonda. They also handle the Simplex
player-piano.
They have just received the agency for the
JSstey piano and organs, and will hereafter have

the entire line of chapel, parlor and church
organs as well as the several styles of pianos
made by that firm.
Mr. Higginbottom says the company will ex-
tend their business in the very near future,
opening branch stores in nearby towns.
A TUNING CATALOG.
Impressive Work Put Forth by Polk's School of
Tuning.
Polk's School of Tuning, Valparaiso, Ind., has
just issued a magnificent catalog which is a de-
cided innovation in this line, and it will give to
readers a comprehensive idea of the Polk School
of Tuning, showing as it does the various depart-
ments devoted to training students in a useful
profession. This institution is already the
largest of its kind in the country, and Mr. Polk
is supported by a corps of teachers and in-
structors who are giving young men careful
training in a profession which should be of much
advantage to them later on.
Mr. Polk has taken up the matter of regulat-
ing and repairing piano players, and he has a
host of testimonials from people who have tested
the value of his educational institution.
GIVING MONEY AWAY.
Piano Dealers Resorting to Bank Books and
Checks to Persuade the Elusive Prospect.
At first glance it would seem as though some
piano houses had very flush bank accounts, judg-
ing from the way they are giving away money.
That is, at first glance it would seem so. A little
investigation, however, shows that the money
thus given away is only good in purchasing a
piano of a certain make. One firm recently dis-
tributed what appeared to be bank books with
a balance of $76 credited to the recipient which
could be applied to the purchase of a piano. The
Wulschner-Stewart Music Co., Indianapolis, Ind.,
who recently advertised a prize contest, with
song books as prizes, decided instead to send out
checks for $65 each, signed by a member of the
firm. Only on close investigation was it notice-
able that instead of being bank checks the cer-
tificates simply called for $65 allowance on the
purchase price of a piano.

is attracting an unusual amount of attention all

PENNSYLVANIA STATE PIANOS SOLD.
At an auction sale of a large part of the fur-
nishings of the Pennsylvania State Capitol at
Harrisburg, which had been declared unservice-
able, two pianos were sold, one bringing $300
and the other $155, they having cost originally
$4,000 and $1,400, respectively. I t was stated
that the dealer purchased the pianos for ship-
ment to Philadelphia. Both instruments were
of solid mahogany finished in white.
