THE MUSIC TRADE REVIEW
tinental Music Co. But then Messrs. Chappell did

Not Obscure; Merely Dimmed.
In our last issue we were tempted to publish a
squib, unblushingly handed to us by the energetic
publicity promoter of the house of Witmark, in
which Frank Pixley, the librettist, was described
as recently being created a Chevalier of the Portu-
guese Society, as well as a member of the Royal
Geographical Society of London. No doubt Mr.
Rennold Wolf, the popular dramatic critic of
The Morning Telegraph, who is said to be able to
detect a "press story" by the application of a cer-
tain deodorizer advertised with a Chinaman as its
trade-mark, must either have forgotten the source
of his information or else endeavored to spare
our feelings, for in commenting upon the Pixley
paragraph he described its origin to "an obscure
western weekly." The following is Mr. Wolf's
own opinion of the matter, and like all his
opinions, is well worth while giving in full. It
is headed "Pixley is Collecting Honors," and
reads: "According to an obscure western weekly,
Frank Pixley, the librettist, has hopped, skipped
and jumped into fresh glcry by attaching himself
to the Portuguese Society as a chevalier, and to
the Royal Geographical Society of Great Britain
as a Fellow. Inquiry as to the source of this an-
nouncement brought out the fact that the infor-
mation had been furnished by Pixley himself. The
degree of chevalier of the Portuguese Society
is not necessarily a mark of extravagance. It
may be purchased in the open marts for about
$25, and when the stock market is depressed
there is a reduction for cash. If Pixley derives
any enjoyment out of the condition of chevalier
that is entirely his affair. Pixley's entry into
the Royal Geographical Society is not so easily
explained. It has always been the general be-
lief that this honor was reserved for explorers
like Henry M. Stanley, David Livingstone and
William M. Gilder. Of course, Pixley put Cin-
cinnati on the map when he wrote "The Prince
of Pilsen." Then that was an entirely new coun-
try he opened up in 'Woodland.' "

ARE YOU THE MAN?
There's a scary sort of feller goin' round the
country through
A-talkin' of the future in a way to make you
blue;
A-predictin' woes and panics and all kinds of
dreadful shocks,
And a-blamin' folk in Wall Street and con-
demin' deals in stocks;
Sayin' our financial system is a structure full
of faults,
And a-callin' in his money and a-loekin' it in
vaults,
And we wish to 'bring him forward and con-
vert him if we can
We are seekin* information—
Say, are you the man?
Shucks! Don't let a little flurry from the clouds
a-passin' by
Make you think the storm has covered all the
broad financial sky;
You would see the sun still shinin' if you'd just
poke out your head;
Stop a-countin' up your losses; count your
blessin's up instead;
Trouble finds the man who falters sooner than
the man who fights;
Quit your talk of comin' panics; help at settin'
things to rights,
Let a little cheerful confidence, not grumblin',
be your plan
Now to save the situation—
Say, are you the man?
"A WALTZ DREAM" PRODUCED.
(Special to The Review.)
Philadelphia, Pa., Jan. 6, 1908.
An English version of Oscar Strauss' Vien-
nese operetta, "A Waltz Dream," was presented
for the first time in this country to-night at the
Chestnut Street Opera House. It is in three acts
and the various scenes presented are beautiful.
The waltz which forms the subject of "A Waltz
Dream" is as Viennese in character as any that
ever came from the pen of the composer's great
predecessor and namesake.
An ensemble oi
eighty and orchestra of forty give full value cu
the choral and orchestral score. Jos. W. Stern.
& Co. are the publishers of the music.
