situdes of the succeeding years, the upbuilding
of the business until it has reached the magni-
ficent development of the present day. The fol
lowing excerpt shows the spirit in which the
founder of the house worked, and the policy from
which there has never been any departure:
"Right at the very outset, Matthias Hohner
entertained the idea to turn out the very best
harmonicas, and no instrument would leave his
workroom without his being assured that their
construction was perfect. By this means, he
gradually gained the confidence of his patrons

working force. Year after year, the little indus-

"In the year 1903 they built an accordeon fac-
tory. This factory was the first of its kind ever
erected in the history of the accordeon trade.
The production up to that time had been an ex-
clusive house industry, and consequently, the in-
struments turned out by any one so-called manu-
facturer were never of uniform quality. Some
idea of the success which this new venture ex-
perienced can be gotten from the fact that in
1906 an additional accordeon factory had to be
built." Their accordeon production is: 1903,8,357;,.

provement in manufacture occurred when, in-
stead of casting the plates, they cut them from
sheets of zinc, which later on were replaced by
the brass plates which are being used to-day and
can only be found in the better, grade instru-

The strides which the house of Hohner has
been making during the past fifty years have
been enormous. To give an idea of the gradual
building up of the Hohner institution and its
present capacity, the following

became necessary to apply in the neighboring

facilities which existed in the workrooms in
those days, one man could not accomplish very
much. A good experienced artisan, after work-

turn out one dozen harmonicas. After these
long working hours his earnings would hardly
