Expenses, Labor, Fuel, Rents, Taxes and the Various Supplies Show an Increase of Cost
That Can No Longer be Overlooked by Manufacturers and Which Must Impress Dealers
With the Fact That More Money Must be Paid for Pianos to Manufacturers and That
They Must Get More from Their Customers Without Delay.
The increased cost of making pianos is one of
the great questions of the hour. In order to sup-
plement recent articles on this subject, which
have appeared in The Review, we have compiled
some interesting statistics, which prove conclu-
sively that the piano manufacturers of this coun-
try are fully entitled to all and even more of
an increase in the wholesale prices of pianos
than they are now demanding. The cost of the
raw material alone has not been the only factor
in making estimates, as selling expenses of all
kinds have increased in the same ratio. In pre-
senting the various estimated advances compari-
sons are drawn from the invoices of a large num-
ber of manufacturers, ranging from the present
day back to 5 to 10 years ago-a time when both
material and labor were at lowest point. On the
other hand, the wholesale prices of pianos are
practically the same and lower, if anything.
Keen competition and a desire for a big output
are mainly the cause for this condition.
