THE MUSIC TRADE REVIEW
STEINWAY TRIUMPHS IN ART
T was not so many years ago when it was necessary to depend upon Europe for the most perfect and artistic work in piano-case
decoration. Recognizing the fact that American artists and artisans imder proper directions can accomplish greater results than
the men of other nations, Steinway & Sons inaugurated an art department for the special creation of instruments of unique
design and rare embellishments.
The wonderful results achieved by this concern, in distinctively art creations, have evoked the most enthusiastic praise from art
critics, and they number among their patrons the wealthiest and most cultured people of the nation. We might say that single instruments
developed in the art department of Steinway. & Sons, New York, represent a modest fortune, and by the marvelous accomplishment of
Steinway it is no
longer necessary to de-
pend upon Europe for
the most perfect and
artistic work in piano-
case decoration.
Steinway & S o n s
have employed the tal-
ent of some of the
most distinguished ar-
tists of the country,
and have thus forcibly
drawn the attention of
the world to the fact
that piano making, as
exemplified by Stein-
way & Sons, is in very
truth an art industry.
One has but little
idea of the skill and
time required to plan.
design, and complete
one of these superb works of art. With the growing wealth and culture of this country, ihe work of this distinguished house is becom-
ing more and more appreciated, and where only a few years ago it was a rare event to make a piano sale that would exceed a thousand
or two, yet to-day it is an occurrence not out of the ordinary for Steinway & Sons to dispose in a single day of single instruments rep-
resenting an outlay of $10,000 or $50,000.
These splendid creations are not only beautiful to look upon, but musically they are fitting companions to the thousands of noble Stein-
way productions of less pretentious exterior which adorn the homes of thousands of delighted purchasers. This distinguished American
house which began
years ago in a modest
way has extended its
operations throughout
the entire civilized
world, and the charm
of the Steinway Piano
is known and appre-
ciated in the utter-
most lands of earth.
Although a distinctly
American product, it
is known as the Crown
Piano of Europe, it
having been specially
selected by nearly all
of the heads of the
Royal
European
Houses. This extended
list, which includes
almost every ruler of
Europe, is remarkable
because it is a world-wide tribute to American creative genius. His Majesty, Nicholas II. Czar of Russia. His Majesty, William II, Emperor
of Germany and King of Prussia. His Majesty, Franz Joseph I, Emperor of Austria and King of Hungary. His Majesty, Edward VII, King of
Great Britain and Emperor of India. Her Majesty, Alexandra, Queen of Great Britain. Her Majesty, Victoria, Queen of Great Britain. Their
Royal Highnesses, the Prince and Princess of Wales. His Highness, the Duke of Edinburgh. His Majesty, Albert, King of Saxony. His
'Majesty, Oscar II, King of Sweden and Norway. His Majesty, Umberto I, King of Italy. Her Majesly, Maria Christina, Queen Regent of
Spain. His Majesty, Abdul Hamid II, Sultan of Turkey. His Majesty, Mousaffer-Ed-Din, Shah of "Persia. And their respective courts.
These royal, patents and diplomas are displayed for public inspection in the Steinway warerooms.
