NOTED GERMAN VISITORS
At the Wm. R. Gratz Co. Warerooms—To Get
Pointers on American Trade Conditions.
Joseph Mock, secretary of the Wm. R. Gratz
Co., has returned from a successful two weeks'
trip in the firm interests through New York
State and Canada. Mr. Mock visited a number of
Gratz patrons, met with a cordial reception at
all points and secured several important orders
for the Gratz specialties.
Two distinguished visitors are here this week
from Germany, Messrs. Richard Bauer and Paul
Durrschmidt, comprising the firm of Bauer &
Durrschmidt, Markneukirchen. This old and fa-
mous house, for which they, the Wm. R. Gratz
Co., are sole agents, own and control one of the
largest factories in the Markneukirchen district.
Their most important specialties are violins,
bows and strings. The chief purpose of the
firm's visit to this country is to become more
fully informed regarding Americas growing
needs in their special field.
LYON BROS. FILE PROTEST
Against
Assessment of Duty on Needles or
Points for Talking Machines.
(Special to The Review.)
Washingon, D. C, Dec. 5, 1904.
Lyon Bros., Chicago, filed a protest against the
assessment of duty by the collector at that port,
in which they claimed an invoice of Gramophone
(talking machine) record points should be classi-
fied as needles, and not as manufactures of metal.
The General Board of Appraisers sustained the
collector, the decision, handed down November
21, delivered by Judge Fischer, being as follows:
"Certain Gramophone points, classified as manu-
factures of metal under paragraph 193, tariff act
of 1897, were claimed to be dutiable as needles
under paragraph 165. Protest overruled. G. A.
4938 followed."

A curio in the way of a drum coming from
the interior of far away Africa is on exhibition
in the display window of the Grunewald music
house in New Orleans. The instrument in ques-
tion is the properly of A. H. Ford, who is con-
nected with the piano department of the Grune-
wald Co., and was sent to him by an uncle who
has traveled extensively in Africa and who now
lives in Libreville, Congo Francais, West Africa.
The drum, which is a unique thing in the way
of musical instruments, such as are used in pro-
ducing the weird music characteristic of so many
of the tribes among the barbarous countries, is
beaten with the flat of the hands, only the fin-
gers and palms being used. This drum is used
by the Fang and Bulu tribes.
