Discussed by J. A. Marsh, Who Has an Invention
Which Embodies Many Features of Merit—In
a Chat With The Review He Discusses Them
at Length—May Excite the Interest of Im-
provers and Manufacturers in This Field—
Makes Some Surprising Claims.
"I was highly interested," said J. A.
Marsh, of Allegheny, Pa., to The Review
this week, "in the expressions of views by
the dealers all over the United States as
communicated to your valuable journal in
the matter of piano players.
"The growth in popularity of the piano
players is formidable and without parallel
in this industry, and the tendency among
all manufacturers is toward greater im-
provements by which a more artistic re-
sult could be obtained. Other ends sought
in this connection are the occupation of
less space; the reinforcement or accentu-
ating of the melody; the playing of the
melody atone ; transposing of key and con-
trolling of the force of blow on individual
piano keys."
Mr. Marsh showed The Review a dia-
gram of a player invention of his embody-
ing, he claims, some of these sought for
essentials which he asserts marks a biir
advance. He said: "Its cost of manufac-
ture will be about two-thirds of that of
the removable kind, thereby appealing to
the greatest portion of music lovers who
are not generally blessed with large means.
A child of six can easily put it into use, or
return it into position underneath the key-
board of piano without the possibility of
making an error, or causing a breakage.
This leaves the piano free for the use of
manual playing if so desired.
"In this player there will be utilized a
music roll of a peculiar perforation, adapt-
ed to pass over a tracker, and so construct-
ed that the user can play the melody alone.
This will enable a non-music reader who
can sing, or one who can play any solo in-
strument, to learn by ear the melody.
When they have it learned by moving a
slide and with the same music roll, they
can play at will the accompaniment on the
piano to their solo, or to the playing of any
instrument or the singing of a ballad.
"All shades of expression are controlla-
ble. A blow that would not mar a feather
to one that is doubly louder than any one
could strike manually, can be had. The
soft and loud effects are, with piano pedals,
made as artistically as by a virtuoso. Ac-
centuating, syncopating, crescendos, dim-
inuendos can be made. The time or speed
of the playing is instantly controllable by
user, through the employment of a very
sensitive motor so that in this construction
any one can play the piano equal almost to
a Sauer or Paderewski the first time they
operate it.
"This player utilizes the lower half of
inside of piano and underneath keyboard.
Great care has been taken in making this
construction easily accessible, separable in
all its parts in event of repairing of either
piano or player (a feature often neglected
by inventors) in fact it can be entirely re-
moyed without defacing or marring the
piano in any respect."
