THE
7VSUSIC TRHDE
HAMBOURG AND KNABE HONORED.
Invited to Play for President and Mrs. Roosevelt
at the White House.
Yesterday afternoon, Jan. 9, Mark Ham-
bourg, the distinguished pianist, played at
the White House in Washington, having
been invited by President and Mrs. Roose-
velt. This pianist is meeting with the great-
est success in all the largest cities and is
securing many return engagements. New
York, Boston, Philadelphia, Baltimore,
Washington, Pittsburg, Cleveland, Cincin-
nati, Chicago, Nashville, etc., have all been
delighted with this great artist. A conspic-
uous factor in Hambourg's success this sea-
son is the superb selection of Knabe grand
pianos which he plays.
MAKING PIANOS IN AUSTRALIA.
It was inevitable that attempts should be
made in Australia to manufacture pianos on
the spot, says our London contemporary,
Music. We learn that Beale & Co., of
George street, Sydney, have been manufac-
turing for some years, and have recently sup-
plied a horizontal grand for the use of the
State Governor and family. They not only
received a warm testimonial for this, but
shortly afterwards received an order for a
decorated piano for a member of the House
of Representatives, who was about to be mar-
ried. It was presented to him by the mem-
bers of the Federal Ministry, and Sir Ed-
mund Barton, the Federal Premier, in mak-
ing the presentation, spoke of the appropri-
ateness of the gift, and Sir Langdon Bony-
thon, one of the South Australian represen-
tatives, declared that no more perfect instru-
ment could be obtained in the world. It
was an upright boudoir grand, the wrest
plank being made of steel and iron, with a
view to resisting the effects of time and cli-
mate, and enabling it to remain at concert
pitch. The arrangement is patented in Eu-
rope and other parts of the world. Although
the pianoforte manufacturing industry is still
in its infancy in the great Southern Com-
monwealth, it may be expected to grow stead-
ily, especially as the more expensive timber
—that used in casework—is indigenous, W e
have often wondered why our piano makers
have not made a freer use of Australian hard-
woods for piano cases. Probably the prin-
cipal reason is that these woods are not easy
of conversion, although it is well known that
when polished, Jarrah, Karri, and other spe-
cies are very beautiful in appearance.
