Mrs. Joyce has composed a melody worthy
of it. She has not written many composi-

teur and professional. There is a "certain

COPYRIGHT AFFAIRS IN ENGLAND.
A very important matter brought up was
the present deplorable condition of copyright
affairs in England. All through London and
the provinces American copyrights, and Eng-
lish copyrights as well, are being hawked
about the streets at a price running from a
penny to six pence per copy. These are pub-
lished in direct violation of the copyright
laws of that country and our own and are
subjecting our publishers to enormous finan-
cial losses. Members of the Music Publish-
ers' Association have been and are actively
at work, and it is understood a bill has re-
cently passed a third reading in the Lords,
which will go far towards remedying the
evil complained of.
Paul Dresser, of the house of Howley,
Haviland & Dresser, was appointed a com-
mittee to look after the matter in Washing-
ton as he has a thorough knowledge of the
affairs in question, and is in close touch with
a number of prominent men who are in
active sympathy with the efforts of the asso-
ciation to overcome this abuse of copyright
law.
Among other matters concerning copy-
rights, tlie association is preparing and will
present to Congress at an early date a most
effective measure bearing on copyright
frauds, which will have a widespread effect
upon the publishing- interests of the country.
Among the most important and interest-
ing feautures of the session was the report
of ft. F. Wood, of Boston, as the represen-
tative of the Association to the International
Congress of Publishers held last year in
Leipzig. As the subject has already been
published in the trade papers, it is not neces-
sary to repeat it. The report was unanimous-
ly adopted, and the secretary was directed
to write to the officers of the congress, and
thank them for the kindly and hospitable re-
ception given the association's representa-
tive.
The full proceedings of the congress are
being published and will be sent to this
country as soon as completed.
The following officers, as announced in
last week's Review, were elected for the en-
suing year: President, J. F. Bowers, Lyon
& Healy, Chicago; vice-president, Hamilton
S. Gordon, New York City; secretary, Chas.
B. Bayly, John F. Ellis Co., Washington,
D. C.; treasurer, E. S. Cragin, Chas. H.
Ditson & Co., New York City.
