CONCENTRATE WHOLESALE INTERESTS.
An important move has been made by
the John Church Co. this week whereby
they concentrate their wholesale sheet mu-
sic interests in Cincinnati and New York
for this country. In this connection they
have disposed of their retail sheet music
and book department conducted at 200-206
W abash avenue to Henry B. MacCoy who
for the past twelve years has been asso-
ciated with the John Church Co. Hence
on and after March 1, 1901, all Western
trade orders for John Church publications
will be filled through the Cincinnati house
and all goods billed at the discounts now
in effect. The Eastern headquarters for
the Church publications will continue, of
course, unchanged at 141 Fifth avenue.
Avon F. Adams will hereafter act as
general manager of the publication de-
partment for all branches, including Lon-
don, making his headquarters in New
York city. He sails to-day by the Umbria
for London in connection with the foreign
interests of the house. He will return to
New York about April 1st.
The latest move of the John Church Co.
is one that should prove in every respect
effective. With two wholesale points, one
West and one East, they are splendidly
equipped to cater to the trade of the coun-
try, while from their London branch, which
is conducted on the same business-like plan,
they keep in touch with the foreign trade
at large.
Under Mr. Adams' capable supervision
we look for a tremendous expansion of the
John Church interests in the music pub-
lishing line during the century now open-
ing.
CONTEMPORARY AHERICAN COHPOSERS.
We draw the attention of all music deal-
ers as well as the publishers, to a beautiful
little work recently published by L. C.
Page & Company, 212 Summer street,
Boston, Mass., entitled: "Contemporary
American Composers," by Rupert Hughes,
M. A. This is a work which will prove an
invaluable source of reference to all those
whose business is in connection with
American musical compositions.
Mr.
Hughes has treated his subject in an
exceedingly able and interesting way.
He tests the American composer under
the following headings "The Innovators,"
"The Academics," "The Colonists" and
"The Woman Composers." Under these
divisions, no one is forgotten, or slighted,
and his treatment is exhaustive. At the
end of the book Mr. Hughes refers to
what he calls "The Foreign Composers,"
those who have been brought up in this
country and lived here, but who were not
born American citizens—and just gives a
list of them; in this roster there are sev-
eral who are practically Americans, but he
draws the line firmly. One of the best
things in the book is Mr. Hughes'Postlude,
in which he says:
