WHEN HE WAS COMMODORE.
A farewell banquet was given to Dewey at Washington
night before he started for the East, and he was toasted :
that have since become famous. Spirited, and in
phetic, lines they are, as the following stanzas will show:—
Fill all your glasses full to-night;
The wind is off the shore ;
And be it feast or be it fight,
We pledge the Commodore.
Ashore, afloat, on deck, below,
Or where our bulldogs roar,
To back a friend or breast a foe
We pledge the Commodore.
Here's to the
Admiral
whom the nation
honors to=day.
