Device for Stringed Musical Instrument.
William S. Reed, Leominster, Mass.,
assignor to American Automatic Banjo
Co., of New Jersey. Patent No. 606,813.
This invention which is patented in
Great Britain and France relates to im-
proved devices for mechanically picking
the strings of self-playing musical instru-
ments, and comprises improved means for
directing and controlling the movement of
the point of each picker-finger with pre-
cision, so as to compel it to engage with
and release its string in the most effective
way, returning to its first position by a
different path, which carries it clear of the
still-vibrating string.
One object of this invention is to pro-
vide improved and simplified means for
controlling the movement of the picker-
finger so as to cause it to move in the pre-
determined path.
A further object is to provide improved
means for attaching the string-picking de-

vices to the head of the banjo or other in-
strument with which it is used in such a
way as not to deaden or otherwise inter-
fere with the vibration of the instrument
while being played, provision being also
made for adjusting the devices toward and
from the strings, whereby the depth of
engagement of the pickers therewith may
easily be regulated.
Transposing Action for Organs. Ernest
B. Thorin, Stockholm, Sweden. Patent
No. 606,748.
This invention which is patented in
Sweden, Germany, Great Britain, consists
in a transposing action for reed organs
whereby the transposition can be made at
any time, even during the playing of the
instrument. Besides the construction of
this transposing organ is much more sim-
ple and cheaper than any hitherto known.
The characteristic of this invention is a
reed board adapted to slide along the wind-
chest. Owing to the construction being
simple, and every expensive means dis-
pensed with, it fills a special place, and at
the same time in its function is very good
and reliable.

on Fifth Avenue better worthy of a visit
than that of Estey & Saxe.
