The Merchants' Association of New York
is entitled to the especial commendation
and support of the business men of this
city for its magnificent and successful
work in its battle against railroad discrimi-
nation ; its activity in procuring the pas-
sage of the Anti-scalper's act; its rally for
sound money; its fight against postal re-
duction ; its agitation in favor of the
proper maintenance of the Erie Canal; its
fight against the express companies; its
efforts to have the city suitably represented
on New York Day at the Expositions at
Nashville and Omaha and its magnificent
work in the matter of publications and in
securing special rates for out-of-town
dealers over the railroads whereby the
business people of this city have been
benefited to the extent of over a million
dollars.
There are many valuable public services
yet remaining to be done which can only
be effected by united action through some
medium such as this association. It is well
known in the music trade as in every other

industry that there are many imposts now
borne by New York merchants which are
unjust and which gradually divert from
this city the main factors of its prosperity.
This association is laboring tirelessly, in-
telligently and enthusiastically towards
bringing about a reform in these particu-
lars.
Among the subjects proposed for future
work are these: A better and cheaper
express service. A cheap and efficient
package post. A general reform of the
postal service of the entire United States
to obviate the present waste in certain de-
tails, and to secure economy throughout,
and to effect many needed improvements.
To relieve New York from the present ex-
cessive terminal charges, which are divert-
ing its grain shipments to other ports.
To agitate for improved consular service,
and to take effective steps to develop the
export trade of this country. To establish
a claim bureau for the quick and proper
adjustment of claims against railroads for
overcharges. ' To organize and maintain a
great and permanent exposition in this
city, so attractive as to draw great numbers
of visitors each year. To arrange for the
holding in this city, as the most convenient
and attractive place, the larger number of
the many conventions held throughout the
United States for numerous purposes.
The members of the piano trade, as well
as every progressive business man, can
best display their appreciation of the good
work which the Association has accom-
plished, and intends to accomplish in the
future, by taking an active interest in and
extending practical support to this repre-
sentative New York organization.
