THE MUSIC TRADE REVIEW
THE "SMALL GOODS" TRADE
The " Bay State " Wares.
Tonk's Immense Catalogue.
INTERESTING LITERATURE WHICH SHOULD BE
IN THE HANDS OF EVERY DEALER.
A WORK OF SOME 232 PAGES, HANDSOMELY
PRODUCED ABOUNDS IN INFORMATION
REGARDING TONK SPECIALTIES AND
ALMOST EVERY INSTRUMENT
MADE.
In The Review's recent note on the lit-
erature of 1897-8 in the several branches
of the music trade, mention was made of
the John C. Haynes & Co. publications.
Space at that time did not permit of any-
thing more than brief notice. These
special books—or more properly, booklets—
are well worthy of extended comment.
The firm, keeping up its best traditions,
has spared neither pains nor expense in
their preparation. In number, there are
six or more, each carefully written, judi-
ciously illustrated, and tastefully and artis-
tically bound in specially designed covers.
One, " T h e Value of Experience in
Zither Making," sixteen pages, illustrates
and describes with appropriate text vari-
ous zithers and harps, with cuts of Bay
State mandolins, guitars and banjos.
" T h e Banjo Player's Problem " is the title
of a second booklet, which contains nine
perfectly finished illustrations of "Bay
State" banjos, with descriptions.
"The Russian Idea," another work of
art, contains a very attractive double-page
picture of seven styles in "Bay State"
mandolins. They appear on a tinted back-
ground with specially designed borders.
"Practical Prestige," the name given to a
fourth issue, deals with "Bay State"
guitars. They are shown in seven styles
amid elegant surroundings.
"Fashion in Band Instruments" might
be taken next. In this work cornets,
trombones and other instruments of the
same class are pictured and described.
"Flute-making," considerably less elab-
orate in appearance than the others, con-
tains many forcible truths that artists
ought to know. Competition in the manu-
facture of string and band instruments is
remarkably keen nowadays, several of the
leading makes running each other very
close, but there is no doubt whatever as to
the great merits of the John C. Haynes &
Co. 's products. In prices and well-finished,
artistic work this firm have always given
entire satisfaction as evidenced in a large
and continually growing business.
