THE
Electrophonic Piano.
The electrophonic piano recently invent-
ed in Germany does away with hammers,
and the old style of pounding music out of
wires by keys and levers is supplanted by
an electric current and microphones which
act as interrupters. Upon a crosspiece over
the strings, from which they are separated
by only a hair's breadth, are arranged the
tiny electric magnets, and a pressure on
a key sends the current into the corres-
ponding magnet. This attracts the metal-
lic string below, but the microphone inter-
rupts the current and therewith the attrac-
tion. The string returns to its former
place, and this continued attraction and
interruption of the current is carried on,
the number of vibrations being regulated
by the pitch of the string. The high
sounds produced by this method have a
decided harp tone, while the lower and
middle registers suggest the 'cello of an
organ, the sound qualities produced being
so different as really to make the piano a
new instrument.
Jacob Doll's Observations.
When The Review called at the Doll
factory on Wednesday, Jacob Doll was
discovered in the act of sorting his morning
mail. In response to the call for news, he
said that the indications are healthy for the
fall season, and reports from customers
very encouraging. As an example, he
showed The Review a brief letter just re-
ceived from a retail customer, inclosing
check. Referring to a Doll piano, style E,
the correspondent said, among other things,
" t h e instrument is giving perfect satis-
faction, and it is with much pride and
pleasure that I use it, and show it to my
friends."
MUSIC TRADE REVIEW
L. Avisus Piano Co.
Krell Officers.
The L. Avisus Piano Co. of Chicago,
which was recently incorporated with a
capital stock of $25,000 with the following
officers, L. Avisus, president; Frank S g
Damrosch, secretary, and Wm, Ott, treas-
urer, have issued the following notice to
the piano trade:
With pleasure I beg leave to inform you
that my trade and the demand for my pi-
anos have increased to such an extent that
I was compelled to remove my factory to
much larger quarters at 496-498 Cly bourn
avenue.
We have enlarged our plant considerably
and also our facilities, and with the best of
modern and newly improved machinery
we promise to give the very best of work
at lowest prices. Your valued orders will
now be filled with greatest promptness and
we trust to receive a goodly share of your
patronage. Trial orders thankfully re-
ceived and filled with dispatch.
A RHYME OF GOOD TIMES.
Good times—they are coming;
Heed not what they say;
You can hear 'em humming
Miles and miles away!
Sailing through the summer,
Fighting through the freeze—
Riding down the rivers
And blowing in the breeze!
Good times—they are coming;
See 'em on the run !
Twinkling in the dewdrops
And shining in the sun.
Dimpling o'er the daisies,
Babbling in the brook,
And looking at a fellow
Like his sweetheart used to look!
Good times—they are coming;
Brethren, clear the way!
Beneath the snows of winter
There blooms the rose of May.
And the hills are green with clover,
The fields with corn and hay,
And we'll sing halleluia
Now the good times come to stay!
