THE MUSIC TRADE REVIEW
Two notable sales of the week made at
Chickering Hall were pianos of special
design, white enamel and gold, to Mrs. J.
W. Beekman,anotherto Mrs. J. G. Wysong.
Both of these instruments were in every
way models of the piano maker's art.
Mrs. Otto Baab, wife of Mr. Otto Baab,
the well-known dealer of Springfield,Mass.,
sailed Wednesday for Germany on a visit to
her mother by the "Friesland," of the Red
Star line. Mrs. Baab will return in about
three months.
The firm of West & Naylor at Goldfield,
Col., have dissolved partnership, and the
business will be continued by Mr. Naylor.
Louis F. Geissler has returned from a
European trip undertaken in the interest
of Sherman, Clay & Co., San Francisco.
Thieves effected an entrance to the mu-
sic store of Hanson & Sons, in Mechanics
hall building, Worcester, some time last
Sunday night, by removing a large pane of
glass in a rear window, but nothing was
stolen except a few small rr.usical instru-
ments.
We notice in the Buffalo Courier an illus-
tration of a train load of pianos shipped by
C. Kurtzmann & Co. of that city to the
Smith & Nixon Co., their Louisville agents,
on May i.
Thos. Floyd-Jones and Albert Haines,
of Haines Bros., have returned from their
recent business trip. Good results have
been secured, including the establishment
of several very desirable new agencies.
The attendance at the Tennessee Centen-
ial Exposition continues to be very grati-
fying to the management, and Nashville
has been crowded with visitors since the
opening day.
Geo. F. Blake, president of the McPhail
Piano Co., Boston, is slated to leave this
week on a Western trip.
Recent accessions to the Wissner staff of
agents are Fred Beyer of St. Louis,Mo., and
the Levassor Piano Co., of Cincinnati, O.
Mr. Jacobson of Wm. Tonk & Bro., this
city, returned last week from a trip
through New England. He reports a very
satisfactory demand for the Tonk spe-
cialties.
Boardman & Gray of Albany, N. Y.,
are constantly in receipt of highly com-
plimentary letters from purchasers of their
instruments. It is noteworthy that they
come to hand unsolicited, hence their
value is accentuated. The Boardman &
Gray piano of to-day is a better instru-
ment than ever in its career. This is the un-
animous verdict of dealers and purchasers.
The father of F. H. Byler, manager of '
the Burton Piano Co., Ashtabula, O., is
seriously ill at his home in West Liberty,O.
Emil Wulschner & Son, Indianapolis,
Ind., have taken the agency for the Norris
& Hyde transposing keyboard pianos.
C. G. Whitney & Co., Saginaw, Mich.,
have moved the entire stock of pianos
they purchased from the Norris Music Co.
to 215 Genessee street. This makes an
ideal location for their business, the build-
ing being peculiarly adapted for display-
ing their line of goods.
The latest acquisition to Philadelphia's
music houses, the Ludwig Piano Co., have
been receiving many complimentary no-
tices in the Quaker City papers.
John Farrell, a farmer in the employ of
Robert A. Widenmann,of Strich & Zeidler,
at his country home in Nanuet, Rockland
County, was arrested on Sunday last for
violation of the Sunday law. Working on
Sundays on farms has been a common
practice in that part of the country at this
time of the year, but Joseph Finch, of Nan-
uet, takes exception to the practice and had
Farrell arrested. The local Justice of the
Peace fined him $5.
Register Wm. Sohmer, brother of Hugo
Sohmer, head of Sohmer & Co., continues
to be prominently mentioned as a candidate
for the Mayoralty of the City of New York.
Mr. Sohmer has made a host of friends
during his public career.
Numerous improvements have recently
been effected in the Chas. M. Steiff factory,
Baltimore. A new reservoir has been
erected with a capacity for 75,000 gallons
of water, and the latest and most approved
system of fire apparatus for the proper safe-
guard of the building has been placed in
the building. Business at the Steiff factory
continues to be very satisfactory.
