THE QUALIFICATIONS OF TUNERS.

A POINTS OP SUPERIORITY
OF THE
SED KPLYING to an invitation to address the
«-)^- late convention of tuners in Chicago, Mr.
Wm. Tonk, of Wm. Tonk & Bro., New York,
wrote to President B. F. Carr of the National
Association pleading inability to attend. Among
other things he remarked in his communication:
" As I have already stated, there is no piece
of machinery or mechanism more intricate than
pianoforte actions, and in which the proper
working of one part depends so much on the
other.

quires great intelligence and knowledge. Still
the inexperienced tuner stands almost isolated.

ment as a machinist or undertake to repair
machinery who has not learned his trade ? The

same is true of less important trades, the car-
penter, plumber, locksmith, house painter, etc.,

" I t seems to me it should be compulsory on
WHOLESALE AND RETAIL WAREROOMS,
any man to fit himself through proper appren-
ticeship for the position of piano tuner, and it

CHICAGO.
" Through the instrumentality of your Asso-
ciation I am satisfied many places could be
found for men who desire to enter upon this
field of labor. Of course men would have to
make up their minds to be apprentices. In
some cases apprenticeship might have to be
paid for; in other cases it could, no doubt, be
obtained free.
" If I can do anything for the members of
your Association in this respect I am at all
times cheerfully at hand ; or if I can serve the
Association with models and parts of actions I
shall be happy to furnish them ; or if any of
your members visit New York, they are cor-
dially invited to inspect the work as it is done
at the Schwander action factory.''

CHICAGO G0TTA6E ORGAN COMPANY,
O. C. KLOCK & CO. WILL SOON BE NUMBERED
AMONG THE BUSINESS FIRMS OF THAT CITY.
f&h C. KXOCK & Co. have leased for a term of
^5
years No. 8i East First street and are
fitting it up elegantly, says the Oswego Times.
The building has three floors and a basement.
They will carry a full line of pianos and organs
and do a general tuning and repairing business.
Mr. Klock is the gentleman who negotiated
with our business men last year to locate his
organ factory here but went to Manitta, O., re-
turning here in June. Mr. Dobbinson is an ex-
pert pipe organ workman and piano tuner, hav-
ing for several years had charge of the great
cathedral organ at York, England. He is now
overhauling the organ in the First M. E. Church
at Gloversville, N. Y., but is expected here
next week. They will shortly begin the manu-
facture of organs in Oswego.
From the foregoing it will be evident that
Mr. Klock has not been idle since coming
Eastward a little while ago.

AN ENIGMA,
Sometimes I am dark, and sometimes I am light.
Whichever I am, I am sure to be right;
No landlord am I, yet I own many " flats, "
When I lift up my voice, men lift off their hats.
As upright as ever a person can be,
Yet the " s h a r p s " in great numbers do live
with me.
"Hard case" I've been called, now give us
your hand,
You acknowledge my " action " is simply
grand.
Don't say I've no feeling, I always have " felt "
Of the very best grade, wherever I dealt.
With the strength of iron, the beauty of gold,
My manifold virtues can hardly be told.
So polished am I that I " cast reflection "
On rivals whose aim is below perfection.
Strong, lasting and sweet; now what have I in
mind ?
