THE MUSIC TRADE REVIEW.
OUR REVIEWING
DEPARTMENT,
WHITE-SMITH PUB. CO., BOSTON.
1. Sweet Nellie, the Girl I Love.
P- Pelham.
2. The Shamrock Band-
L. F. Bans.
3. Midsummer Night.
G. G- Couchois,
1. A waltz song of the popular kind—pretty
and catching.
2. Already a favorite on the variety stage.
3. A tuneful serenade to which Edward Fuller
supplied the verse.
The following are some recent instrumental
pieces from the presses of the White-Smith Co.
4. Happy Hearts, Galop.
J. T. Clark.
5. The Latest Fad, Schottische.
F. H. Russell.
6. Paulina-Lula, Dances.
Ed- Gabriel.
7* National Honor, March-
P- Keller.
8. Castenet, Dance.
P. Keller.
9. Mardi Gras, March.
D. L. White.
4. A pleasant and intelligently constructed
dance composition.
5. Equally meritorious.
6. Two Spanish dances in different styles.
"Paulina " is distinctly Spanish, while " Lula "
possesses French characteristics.
7. Rather a pretentious title for a march, yet
Mr. Keller gives us a good effective and digni-
fied work which justifies its use.
8. Another good composition by the same
composer.
9. This is an excellent example of Mr. D. L.
White's ability as a composer. The piece has
a handsome title page, illustrated in colors.
We have also a number of pieces in small
sheet form on our desk, including orchestral
and band scores, which serve to indicate the
activity of the White-Smith Co. at present.
HAMILTON S. GORDON, NEW YORK.
1. The Cloister Garden.
H. Millard.
2. Listen To My Heart Again.
W. C- Parker.
3- My Love Has Gone Away.
D. M. Long.
4. Only Love's Whisper.
W. Pegg.
5. My Mother's Last Prayer.
J. W. Wood.
1. A romance from the German of Heinrich
Leutold, translated by Irene Putnam. Millard's
setting is excellent, and the whole forms a dig-
nified and earnest composition.
2. The words of the song are by W. H. Gard-
ner. Mr. Parker has written a very pretty and
effective melody around them, and has arranged
it tastefully.
3. A very excellent work. Mr. Long has a
marked style, and evinces a serious aim in this
creditable song.
4. An ambitious song with a pretty waltz re-
frain. The words are by Edward Oxenford, the
English song poet.
5. A pleasant home song of the popular order,
written with taste and expression.
E. Hoist.
6. Black Pearl, Gavotte.
L. Wallis.
7- Power of Love, Waltz.
R. Baldwin-
8. Mamie's Skirt Dance.
E. E Newell.
9. Majestic, Gavotte.
K. K. Coats.
10- A Spanish Thought.
E. Meyer-Helmund.
11. TanzWeise.
6. Edward Hoist invariably writes acceptable
music of this kind. " Black Pearl " is a very
pretty gavotte,
7. A good waltz. The various movements
are blended skillfully, and there is a well written
introduction and coda.
8. This is a bright composition, suggesting
the constructive feature of the original skirt
dance by Meyer Lutz.
9. Original and tuneful. By the way, why
do all gavottes seem to be written in F ?
10. An excellent morceau depicting Spa'nish
tone color. Kathleen Kyle Coats has given us
a work full of originality and spirit.
11. Meyer Helmund's eminent composition
is reproduced in this edition with fingering by
Hans Seiffert. The Gordon house has rendered
advanced students and pianists a signal service
in presenting it in this form.
OLIVER DITSON CO., BOSTON.
1. Sooner or Later.
W. F. Sudds.
2- Suffer Little Children.
M- Roeder.
3- Take up Thy Cross-
C. E. B. Price.
4- Song O'Gowans-
F. 0. McCartney.
1. The words of this song are by Stewart
Allen. Mr. Sudds has set them very effectively.
2. A sacred song by the eminent composer
Martin Roeder, with German and English
words. It is a dignified and serious work,
worthy of study.
3. Another religious composition full of
spiritual character and sweetness.
4. A quaint Scottish ballad full of opportuni-
ties for an intelligent singer. The lyric, by
Charles F. Robinson, is very charming.
5. Bon Vivants-
W- F. Sudds.
6. Old Hickory, Schottische.
P. Seymour.
5. Mr. Sudds'piece, descriptive as it is of
good fellowship, is full of happy spirit and good
cheer. It is a clever work.
6. A military schottische, which ought to be-
come popular.
We have also before us a number of publica-
tions for solo and two mandolins from the
Ditson Co., which claim acknowledgement.
They are, Entre Nous, Polka Majurka, J.
Schrammell, Franz Ferdinand, March, Czel-
bulka, Frida, Gavotte, A Terron ; Flight of
Birds, Polka, by Waldteufeld for two mando-
lins, also Mid Bowers Fair, Waltzes, for solo or
two mandolins ad libitum.
H. F. RANSDELL, music dealer, of Eastport,
Me., has been visiting Dexter, Me.
AN effort is being made to reorganize the
cornet band at Oxford, Me.
J. HOWARD STANNARD has been forced to re-
sign his position as Secretary of the Prescott
Piano Co., Concord, N. H., on account of poor
health.
THE New England Piano factory, Boston,
Mass., has shut down for four weeks. The com-
pany employs about 400 hands. Dull business
is the cause.
THE fitting up of both A. C. Andrew's new
music stores, Willimantic, Conn., has been
completed and they are very handsome and at-
tractively arranged.
COURT OF CHANCERY, Trenton, N. J.,
has
refused John Armstrong, of Newark, a receiver
for the Antisell Piano Co., because he knew at
the time he became interested in the company
that it was not in good financial condition. He
advanced the company $4,000, and now states
that it is insolvent.
