MORE FIGURES AND FACTS
FROM THE CENSUS,
GLEANED AT THE NATIONAL BAHTAL
[BY OUR SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT.]
WASHINGTON, D. C , Oct. 19th, 1892.
|5> ECENTLY the Superintendent of the Cen-
<-)
sus has been issuing a series of bulletins,
announced as " preliminary and subject to modi-
fication for final report, therefore fair criticism
and suggestions are invited, with a view to such
revision and correction as may appear neces-
sary. ''
The data appearing in the series has apparent-
ly been chosen with a view of presenting an
epitome of characteristic mechanical and manu-
facturing industries of all principal cities of the
country. Each number is valuable and interest-
ing, but the work can not be fully measured at
its real value by excerpts. However, for our
purpose it must suffice that, at this time, only
such selections of facts and figures shall be
made as are of special interest to the music
trade.

ing is, of being equal to those of all the United
States, as reported in 1880.

In the Bulletins there appear certain compara-
tive statements and much other matter of gene-
ral interest, and no one can judge of their
importance and value only from what appears
herein. This communication must necessarily
be brief, nevertheless it may serve to invite
attention to the fact that the manufacture of
musical merchandise is now ranked among the
leading industries of the country. The trade is
to be congratulated upon its recognition in
economic statistics. Whoso looks into the mat-
ter closely may learn that sentiment may be
closely allied to facts. Heaven born music ap-
pears doubly blessed when an industrial army is
reviewed, engaged in honest and profitable labor
of building instruments required in her benign
and civilizing service.
