JOHN HARDMAN.
By the death of John Hardman a distinguished and
honored member of the piano trade has been removed
from among us, and a citizen of high moral worth has
been lost to this community. From his earliest years
the deceased gentleman was conspicuous for upright-
ness, thoroughness, and kindliness.
Mr. Hardman was the son of Hugh Hardman, an
English piano-maker who still resides in New York
city, and who at one time ran a piano factory here. In
this factory Hardman, Jr., served his apprenticeship.
On the retirement of his father, deceased associated
himself with the late Mr. Dowling, in conjunction with
whom he built the great Hardman factory at Fifty-
seventh street and Tenth avenue. Prior to the de-
struction of this edifice by fire in 1882, Mr. Leopold
Peck became connected with the firm. After Mr. Dow-
ling's death, Hardman, Peck & Co. established them-
selves in their present factory on Eleventh avenue and
Forty-eighth and Forty-ninth streets, N. Y., the techni-
cal department whereof was placed under the supervis-
ion of Mr. Hardman.
Deceased was in the foremost rank of American
piano-.nakers, both as a practical man and a theorist.
Mr. Hardman died on Sunday, the 10th inst.,at his res-
idence in Madison avenue, after a brief but violent at-
tack of peritonitis. He was in his forty-seventh year.
Hundreds of personal friends mourn his untimely
departure, for his social qualities were of a very sterling
and genial character.
The funeral took place on the 13th inst., at St. Paul's
Church, Fourth avenue and 117th street. Deceased
leaves a widow and four daughters.
