Blackpool Pleasure Beach:
More Than Just an Amusement Park
by Professor Vanessa Toulmin
Professor Vanessa Toulmin of the National Fairground Archive presents the
story of Blackpool Pleasure Beach. The memorabilia book has been carefully
produced in close collaboration with Pleasure Beach and offers a unique insight
into the history of the park.
The 144 page book showcases many images from the park's never before
seen archives, plus a whole host of recent pictures detailing the various
changes at Pleasure Beach. Chapters include the numerous world renowned
designers that have worked with Pleasure Beach creating stunning art deco
architecture throughout the park, the many award winning shows and the
development of roller coasters from the early wooden designs right up to the
modern steel looping counterparts.
Amanda Thompson, Pleasure Beach Managing Director says: "Pleasure Beach
is such a special place which has provided amazing entertainment for the
whole family for over 100 years. The book captures the magic of the park -
detailing our incredible history from the very first ride in 1896 right up to the
latest exciting development of Nickelodeon Land due to open in April 2011.
Pleasure Beach is built on a 42 acre site and considered the most ride intensive
park in the world. It is designed by some of the leaders of the amusement park
industry, and has a huge influence on the worldwide leisure industry. Since its
creation it's been a real family affair and remains so to this day. Pleasure
Beach and its incredible shows have been enjoyed by millions of people."
Professor Vanessa Toulmin , Chair in Early Film and Popular Entertainment,
University of Sheffield says, "The Pleasure Beach is the greatest amusement
park in the World. It's a credit to both the Thompson family and the people of
Blackpool - that this magnificent resort has been here for four generations and
