targets within a wider range. Initial deployment of the Defiant against enemy bombers
met with great success. Soon afterward, Luftwaffe pilots learned the Defiant could easily
be defeated by simply avoiding the kill zone behind the aeroplane. The Defiant was
defenceless if the enemy approached head-on or from underneath the aircraft. It was then
redeployed as a night-fighter, a role at which it excelled until later during the war when
radar became commonplace.
Oliver Whales was tapping into the patriotic spirit of the people by showcasing a
fighter plane as the centrepiece of this game. In addition to the Defiant, Whales
produced a similar conventional sized allwin, with Spitfire cut into the aircraft template.
