we hear a lot about the image of
the amusement machine industry these
days. Quite rightly, the majority of
responsible, level headed people who
earn a living in the industry want to see
the image improved. It doesn't help
towards this end when isolated
incidents involving youngsters who are
alle9ed to have stolen money to play
on video machines (they are all Space
Invaders as far as the mass media is
concerned) get blanket coverage. It
does not take the "knockers" long to
start throwing dirt.
What a pity, therefore, that the
"knockers" could not have witnessed
the presentation of a Space Panic
game to students at the Portland
Assessment and Development Centre,
handicapped school leavers and
recently discovered that video games
were a marvellous therapy for them.
Since they started using video games
the students have been achieving in
three months what used to take three
years.
No one could have remained
unmoved at the sight of these students,
some of them very severely
handicapped, responding to the
challenge
of
Space
Panic.
Unfortunately good news rarely gets
the prominence reserved for
chronicles of gloom and despondency
and the story of Portland College and
the video game industry has not so far
received the measure of publicity
given to the knocking stories. But then
this is a world of strange values.
