Serial Number
Continued from page 60
count? Then we'd have serials 505
and 580 for two different Watling
OWL/JUDGE family machines. It's
more logical than what we started
out with.
To get back to the more modern
that the cabinet had its own 309,422
was listed as a SILENT GOLDEN
VENDER 1$ play side vender model
of the "Roman Head." So someone
revamped the cabinet to fit the 5$
lists, so the machine was upgraded
play mechanism years ago. Perhaps
and revamped to 50$ play years
back
No big deal on the double numbers
Bell machines, we've got some in
that's when penny play went out of
teresting Mills mixes. Bob Christian
favor in the late 1930s, and the
sen of Bandon, Oregon sent us a
operator wanted to get the most
picture of his MillsSILENTGOLDEN
out of the machine that he could.
"Roman Head" in 5$ play, serial
308,183, and added that the serial
shown is for the mechanism, and
play, serial 358,525 has the serial
number on the mechanism. The
cabinet carries the serial 424,832
for a lower denomination in old
Old records have revealed other
double numbers this month. That
Mills MYSTERY "Blue Front" 50$
"Probably the most exciting
news for those of us who like
the really old machines,
particularly the floor models,
is the batch of serials with
supporting dates sent in . . ."
for the next machine. That Mills
MYSTERY "Blue Front" 10$ play
serial 381,058 has a 10$ mechan
ism numbered 382,700. But we do
find other revamps in the later
numbered machines. That Mills
BLUE FRONT "Castle Front" serial
424,764 in 50$ play started out as a
lower denominator, with the 50$
play probably added in the World
War 2 years. Same for the BROWN
FRONT serial 424,832 which has
an old Mills MYSTERY"Blue Front"
mechanism in it for 50$ play. All of
this is typical of the wartime years
when new machines weren't avail
able and old machines were fre
quently revamped to increase the
coinage.
The last Mills revamp is recent,
with the 50$ BLACK CHERRY with
its large 50$ coin chute revamped
as a GOLDEN NUGGET.
Jumping to Watling, Rich Fague
sent us a serial of 76,746 for his 5$
ROL-A-TOP, noting that the inside
tag says "Inspectors No. 40 Style of
Machine 11-35." The 1935 date
seems too early for that 1937 serial
number. What's actually happened
here is that the machine is "Style
No. 40" and the inside tag was
printed in November 1935, and used
for machines many years thereafter.
So 1937 is the machine date.
Does anyone else have "funny
paper" inside of their machines?
Send them in, and let's see if we can
figure them out.
