which still retains its
original format almost 90 years
later. Tom Watling, founder ofthe
Watling Machine Co., may be best
known for the tens ofthousands of
penny scales that were found in so
many public places years ago.

issue. Incidentally, it is interesting
to note that the article accom
panying
the photo claims
that
"Charlie Fey, an Australian by
nativity, brought the original ma

Charles. Ms. Fey states that her
famous ancestor immigrated to the
U.S. about 1882 from Bavaria,
and built the first 3-reeler about
1895 in San Francisco.
