corollary on spring winding guarantees that if you are
careful to unwind just enough wire for the anticipated
need, you will wind up with about % as much as you
really need, and you'll have to start over.
The finished spring will be somewhat larger than the
mandrel after you reverse the drill to release the
tension, but with a little experience you will learn just
how much to compensate by using a slightly smaller
mandrel.
In the absence of the correct original spring, you will
need to experiment. Forthis reason, it isgood to have a
supply of various sizes of music wire. In my shop, we
commonly use sizes 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10 for making coil
springs, and thicker sizes for making hairpin springs
used for flap valves and other parts in music machines.
You will learn just what you need after you find out how
often your newly learned skill really comes in handy.
Following is a chart of music wire sizes; note that
these do not correspond to standard wire gauge sizes.
