From "Iron" to "Aluminum" in a few short years.
Here
are two Mills counter side vender bells that look virtually
alike in details, but are a lot different in fabrication.

1915 O.K. GUM VENDER, the first of
The "Bell" device at the
the front carries the dates "1776-1915".
The front is cast iron.
Next, to the right, is the same
basic machine in aluminum, with no date on the "Bell"
device other than "1776".
O.K.
This is the 1922 COUNTER
Both are 5c machines, yet their serials give away
their dates.
The "iron" model is serial 33,456 from 1915,
and the "Aluminum" model is serial 56,654 from 1922.
Both are in the Rick Lee collection.

This is the Mills 1920 O.K. GUM
VENDER, 5c play, cast iron front, serial 46,155.
It has
the "Bell" front without the added date after the "1776".
The serial and the cast iron front date the model.
the "Spearmint" below the gooseneck.
Bell, but the side vender is missing.
Note
It looks like a
The holes on the
side reveal the model, as does the "O.K." feature.
The
nickname for this line was the Mills "Bell", based on
the graphic device at lower left.
This is Frank Leslie's
machine.
Here's the big change in Mills Bells.

The machine
is the 1924 OPERATOR BELL, 5cplay, aluminum front,
serial 107,728.
Note
that the

"Bell" is gone from the lower left, now
appearing in a banner in the center of the lower front.
"Spearmint" is also gone, and vertical "Owl" columns
left and right on
the
front create a new design, giving
this model the "Owl" nickname.
The machine belongs
to Frank Leslie who was kind enough to send a bunch
of shots with his serial numbers.
