Ciga rette tax stamp sales are still climb·

reports that sal es for May of 1949 were

Arthur Godfrey's popularity on the air and
TV shows h ere have don e much to stimu·

Malt beverage sales are down 5.10 per
cent over last year, whil e 3.2 beer sales

sales up 12.76 per ce nt over last year,
shows an in crease, Bailey said.
Beechnut gum leads in popularity in
Columbus, it appears, with Jui cy Fruit
and Wrigl ey's Spearmint followin g close
on its heels. Sales of gum are rather good.

Receipts in ge~eral have held rather
firm and are off only slightly from th e same
month last year. There has been a sli ght
pi ckup in the purchase of new equipm ent
which seasoned minds attribute to th e after
effects of th e ACMMA Show and the elim·

ca utiou sly expanding in the Bay Area.
General business conditions in San Fran·
cisco are running practically th e same
course th ey did last year. It is estim ated
that the level of business activity will reo
main fairly steady until it starts its Se p·
tember climb. San Francisco department
stores continue to hold th e best record of
th e ma jor cities of the Twelfth F ederal
Reserve Distri ct, latest fi gures indicating
sal es about four per cent greater than the
corres pondin g period a year a l!;o. Oakland
department store sales are off a few per
cent. Total employm ent in the Bay Area
co ntinues to ri se stea dily, and wholesale
and retail sales remain about what th ey
were last year.
Sales at vendin g machine location s were
off during th e first half of th e year. Eatin g
a nd drinking places re ported a drop of
about ten per cent, and drug stores a dro p
of about 'fline per cent. Wholesal e tobacco
sales were off about four per cent. This
situa tion was reRected in coin ma chin e
receipts. But in view of th e gen erally
healthy economi c conditions, it was not
considered a serious or perm anent develop·
ment, and there has been an upswing in
th e past month .
