Whil e th e year·e nd holid ay peri od al·
ways brin gs co mpa ra ti ve qui et to th e auto·
matic vend ing trade, ome phases of the
merchan di se supply busin e s were makin g
big news in hi gh ma rket circles. Th e out·
come will have definit e effects on general
price tre nds on merchand ise in 1950.
ugar. cocoa beans, coffee and tobacco
we re all makin g market news in th e clos·
in g month of 1949, were all more or les
involved in politi cs - even intern ation al
politi cs.
Suppli ers of ca ndy, soft drinks, ice cream ,
etc., were fig htin g for a bi gger nation al
sugar qu ota next yea r, hopin g th a t it would
mean lower suga r pri ces. But th e market
outl ook was th a t th e sugar quota would
be set low, as for 1949, and th a t it would
be adjusted durin g th e year if suga r pri ces
began to climb too hi gh. Th e nati onal
poli cy, to protec t U. S. growe rs, is defi·
nitely to kee p uga r pri ces a t a current
high level. This policy wa dec ided by
Congress wh en it passed th e Sugar Act of
1948.
This policy of a hi gh level of pri ces for
suga r will probably stand in the way of
any decided downward pri ce trends on
such merchandi se as candy bars, soft drinks
and ice crea m. Th e candy bar manufac-
turers can shift to corn sweeteners wh en
sugar gets too high , but only r ecently
prices adva nced on corn produ cts except
dextrose.
But while th ere are big market maneuve r-
ings on material s u ed in merchandise,
operators will recognize that 1949 has bee n
a good merchandise year, with ampl e sup-
plies a nd some welcome pri ce reduction s.
Merchandise suppliers have also made
considerabl e strides in catering to the auto-
matic vending trade. The large number of
merchandise exhibits at th e recent NAMA
convention was full proof of thi s attitude.
With a good merchand ise supply year just
closing, the outlook is favorabl e for mer-
chandise supplies in 1950. Prices may not
decline as fast, or as soon as operators
would like but the general outlook is fo r
grea ter consideration of operators by th e
upply firm s.

"We're going to make this a real eye-

precious produ ction hours and conside rable
ca h in tim e lost wh en employees dash off
for a bit of refreshin g," said Silbe rm an.
