in 1948 were credi ted with slightly less than
a one per cent sales gain. The firm re-
ported that its new king-size cigarette, Cava-
lier, tested in three cities, has met with a
good response from smokers. .
Internal Revenue reports on cigarette tax
collections are available for January, to
give some light on cigarette use for the first
month of the year. The official report says
that cigarette revenue for the first month
was well ahead of the first month of'1948.
Thus, Uncle Sam confirms reports of favor-
able cigarette sales trends for the first lap
of the new year.
Operators will be interested in reports
on types of locations that may be showing
bigger cigarette sales. An association offi-
cial high in the grocery store field said such
stores are becoming an increasingly impor-
tant outlet for cigarettes, probably showing
greater gains in sales than any other type
of store. The trade leader said the surface
has only been scratched, however, and that
the major opportunities for selling cigar-
ettes in groceries lies ahead.
Some cigarette operators have already
found grocery stores, even the chains, to
be good locations. Perhaps it will be wise
to note that marketeers have their eye on
grocery stores as much bigger cigarette out-
lets.
Price wars on cigarette prices are show-
ing up in scattered cities, one of the latest
being chain store prices being cut even to
15 cen ts in Los Angeles.
