United Plant Shows
Materials In Games
CHICAGO-With the introduction of its
new game, Aquacade, the amuSement games
trade becomes all the more conscious of . the
high production efficiency of the new plant
of United Manufacturing Co. here. De-
signed from the planning stage to produce
modern amusement games, the plant is
hailed as a credit to the Industry because
of its thoroughly modern construction.
-Chicago newspapers have given frequent
mention to the new addition to the indus-
trial plants of the area, one of the most
recent items devoting 15 column inches to
telling how games are tested in the plant
and also how new models are fully ad-
justed in every detail.
Once inside the attractive building, the
working plant may be viewed in three gen·
eral sections. The executive offices at once
give the impression that it has been de-
signed for work and efficiency rather than
for display. Executives of the firm have had
long experience in the games business and
say their one purpose is to design and· build
more games that prove to be hits with op-
erators, The engineers who develop new
ideas have their quarters in the front part
of the building, close to the executive
offices. The entire building is air condi-
tioned throughout.
Going from front to back, the spacious
center section of the building is the assem-
bly department. The section is so well
lighted that not even a shadow falls upon
tlie benches or assembly lines. The big space
and the long assembly lines show at once
there are a lot of work and materials that
go into a modern pin ball game.
Modern games are electric and so the
assembly of a game usually starts with the
many small electrical parts that go on

the under side of tbe playboard and also
inside the scoreboard. United makes every·
thing tbat goes into its games except the
cabinets and a few electrical supplies such
as copper wire. The wiring of parts, relays
and gadgets is done in its own plant. The
parts also have to be put into position and
here the real work of assembly begins. At
least seven assembly lines, about 60 feet
long, provide facilities for speeding up the
output of games in this section of the
assembly division. Each section also has
long rows of assembly lines.
When all the electrical gadgets have been
fastened to the playing board, on each side,
it is ready to join the body of the cabinet
on other assembly lines, and the final
stages on this assembly line include much
testing of all the ingenious circui ts and
relays that go to make a game free of bugs.
A giant production scoreboard on one side
of the building gives evidence of each day's
output. Workers take great pride in this
because they work under the incentive of
a bonus system. They had received a 28
per cent bonus for the week previous to
this reporter's visit.
While the assembly lines and working
force show the result of efficient organiza·
tion, a visitor will probably be more im·
pressed by all the 'g adgets and relays that
go into a game than anything else, and
how much work is required to get every·
thing together and in its place. It would
be a great education if public leaders and
officials might sometime get a view of how
games are made.
The third division of the big building is
what may be called the factory proper, for
here are all the presses, drills, metal work·
ing machinery and other tools that stamp
or shape the parts that go to make th e
game. The machine tools in ' the plant are
new alrriost 100 per cent, only a few having
been brought from the old plant. Com-
pletely new tools and a very efficient layout
of the floor plan makes this a modern pro-
duction plant in every respect. The plant
not only has its machine tools but it also
has a complete plating department for fin-
ishing metal parts of all kinds,
When a visitor sees the batteries of rna·
chines, and especially the piles of steel
sheets, rods and other materials, he gathers
new evidence that there is a lot of work
and materials that go into a modern amuse·
ment game.
There are also enclosed sections for the
heating plant, a complete air conditioning
plant, and other accessory departments.
The shipping ,and r eceiving departments are
separate and each will accommodate the
longest trailer trucks, inside the building.
A large and well planned cafeteria adds to
the completeness of the plant.
