Machine Ideas 10 Swell Trade Gains
Reports, opinions and surveys of business
conditions continued to flow well Into
February. A majority of firms had issued
their annual reports sometime during the
first six weeks of the year, so that a broad
view of the national prosperity could be
had.
January business seemed to conform to
its usual pattern, with the main question
being whether the first month of 1949 had
set a lower level than the same month a
year ago. Operators of coin machines gen-
erally reported that January had followed
its usual course of a decline in business,
but · a majority of operators seemed hesi-
tant al'>out comparing the present period
with the same time at the beginning of 1948.
There are some differences of opinion
as to how 1949 has started off for the
country as a whole. Business Week maga-
zine summed up the story of 1948 by say-
ing, "1948-it paid to be big, but was
tough to be small." This statement agrees
with the prediction made in this column
many months ago that the basic national
issue in 1949 would be the competitive
fight between big firms and small firms.
At this time, the foreign outlook seems
to be settling down to a long struggle that
removes the sensation from headlines, and
people begin to think more about the do-
mestic trends in employment, retail trade
and prices. It can be said that our home
problems have almost simmered down to
these three things - employment, retail
trade and prices.
These subjects will be considered under
the topical headings further along. It is
well to note that 1949 started off with un-
employment on the increase, with the work
week becoming shorter, and in general the

LOS ANGELES-The amazing growth of shulHeboard in the West Coast
area drew attention anew to the manufacture of coin machines and accessories
in the West. The western territory also put on a big display at the 1949 'Coin
Machine Show, the total number of firms exhibiting being next to the total
number of firms from the big Chicago manufacturing area . .
The onward march of manufacturing firms in the eleven states that make
up the western territory is a reviyal of the initiative of this area that con-
tributed much to the progress of the Industry through many years before
World War II.
New ideas for ~achines are showing up, to continue the long reputation of
the western states for originating machines that sweep into popularity over
the nation. All this activity gives hope for the Industry as a whole, as well as
for the members of the trade in the area itself. Those who are planning the
next trade conventions say they have seen this growing manufacturing activity
and are counting on it to help make the next conventions set new marks in
trade history.
whole subject of employment threatening
to be the top worry of the year. It is the
point now that is being watched most'
seriously by the experts, but trends have
not yet been serious enough to cause alarm.
