Removal Sale
CHICAGO-After 42 years on Congress
Street, Hecht Nielsen, Industry's largest
ve tera n dealer in vending, is movin g to
ma ke way for a new state and federal high-
way and is taging a mammoth removal
sale prior to taking over th e new quarters.
Present stock amoun ts to over 6000 penny
a nd nickel merchandise vendors, plus thou-
sa nds of other machin es and u ppl ies and
is probably the large t single stock vending
machines and accessories ever assembled
under one management. Nielsen realizes
the expense involved in moving such a large
stock to new quarters and has slashed
prices accordingly to reduce inventory to
a minimum.
0 trades are bein g consid-
ered and it is anticipated hundreds of op-
erators will partake in th e tremendou s sav-
inp;s the sale offers.
ielsen is well known in th e trad e and
is author of a series of articles known as
" Half a Century of Operatin g."

my orofit is mu ch larger, but the number
of cigarettes sold is a little Jess."
Illinois, Indiana and Ohio reports seemed
to agree on th e fact of in creased sales.
Pennsylvania operators did not agree in
reports, a majority report in /!: decrea ed
sales wh ile some reported seasonal incteases.
Reports of decl.iniog sales varied widely,
including such states as Arizona, Michigan ,
Wa hington and Wisconsin .
With 40 states coll ectin g a tax on ciga-
rette , it wou ld seem possible to get general
repor ts on sales and hence make compa ri-
sons. But very few of th e states keep ciga·
rette revenues sepa rate from other taxe
and still fewer make monthly reports on
th e revenues received.
With the summ e r touri st season on, oper-
ato rs were also asked if th ey profited to
any extent on th e tourist trade. The an-
swers co nform ed, naturally, to well-known
territorial lin es. A big majority reported
that th ey gained some f rom tourist travel,
but an operator in Washin /!:ton state com-
men ted : "Very littl e this year."
Cig. Manufacturers Report
Excellent Sales Last Year
EW YORK - The big manufacturers.
th emselves have finally mad e their annual
repor ts on 1948 sales, to give more data on
th e co mp etition of brands. Th e experts had
mad e their repo rt ea rlier in th e year, one
of th em digested in th e March REVIEW,
page 41.
American Tobacco reports a net gain in
tota l sales last year of nearly 7 per ce nt
over 1947. Finan cial papers gave big play
to th e net income of th e firm, showin g a
considerable gain over th e previous year.
Price in crease on cigarettes h elped th e fina l
net income of all the major manufacturers.
Th e annual I'eport stre ed th e high cost
of tobacco last year and predicted that
tobacco costs would continue high. Pall
Malls made good sa les gains last year and
will be pushed in the curren t year.
Lorillard, maker of Old Golds, stated
frankly in its ann ual report that the price
increa e last year helped earnings during
the last five months of 1948, and also
helped to offset costs that continued to rise.
The firm announced an all-time high in its
total sales. The firm is introducing a new
44
brand, Embassy, in the king-size field. Last
year was considered a good year for all
brands in th e king-size and to sup;gest a
bright future for the type. Lorillard has a
big new advertising program.
Federal tax regulations limit the king-
size to some ex ten t, and makers think the
new style would soon take the popular lead
once revenue rules are amended in th eir
favor . Opera tors might th en have to give
them more co nsid eration.
Ligp;ett & Myel' ha s under way a financ-
ing prop;ram but it also keeps pushing
Ches terfields, credited with making sales
ga ins last year of about 6 per cent.
Philip Morris claims a sa les p;ain of 39
per ce nt la t year, over 1947. Other esti-
mates had given th e brand a p;ain of abou t
24 per cen t, and all the experts seemed to
give Philip Morri credit for having made
th e biggest percentage gain among all
brands.
The general reaction to the manufac-
turer's reports is that they provide th e basis
for another year of terrific compe tition. A
number of th e minor brands are getting
into th e fray, in cluding Raleip;hs with a
revived premium idea, and operators will
do well to keep an eye on th e gains being
made by king·size brands.
