po und salmon on th e Columbi a rive r near
Astoria and had the p rize fish canned in
ha lf·poun d ca ns und er hi s own label :
"Budge's Best." La bel showed Budge reo
c1 ining in a fishing boat, wi th a bottle of
co rn likker at his side, a fi shing line tied to
hi big toe, a nd bi g salmon j um pin g out of
the wa ter all around the label. Original
letterin g had been "Budge's Bu t," a nd
th e " u" was replaced with the "e" wh en
the 40·pound er fin ally decided to take the
ba it and take u p homestead in Budge'

For Christmas Budge remembered hi

the passing of Lew M enkes.
Menkes was born June 29. 1881 and
died a t the age of 63. H e w as a member
of the Board of Directors of the Cali·
fornia Music Operators' Asso cia tion and
was one of the mos t fair. kind. and lib-
eral men ever to serve on the Board.
