OPA Hits Cig Gambling
LEXINGTON, Ky.-On February 17th
the OPA charged in a sui t filed against
Hoskie Goldberg, doing business as the
Sterling Novelty Co., and the Simplex Co.,
that the defendant violated OPA price
ceiling regulations by selling cigarettes
from vending machines attached to slot
machines.
The suit asked preliminary and perma·
nent injunction s to restrain Goldberg from
continuin g the alleged violations. It is
claimed the defendant sold cigarettes
" through vending machin es which he owns
. . . in various business establishments,"
and alleged that since last October 1 he
h ad "altered the operation of hi s vending
machines by placing an obstruction over
that portion of the machines which for·
merly dispensed cigarettes at the proper
ceiling price per package."
It added that he had "arranged the
operation of the machines so that th ere·
a fter persons impelled by th e desire for
cigarettes were required to play a slot
machine device attached to vendi'ng rna·
chines and co uld only receive cigarettes
through chance."
A si milar suit previously had been filed
here against H. Frank Bedford, Falmouth.
Both suits accused defendants also of
failing to file proper reports with War
Price and Rationing Boards and with fail·
ure to post maximum prices of cigarettes.

WASHINGTON-The War Production
Board has taken over control of the produc·
tion a nd di stribution of matches, to assure,
it said, th e meetin g of military require.
ments an d preventing mal·di stribution of
civilian suppli es. The allocation of matches
will be controlled at the producer level.

"No Key-No Cigar ettes" is a sign on
many hotel stands today. One dealer in
Chicago is scrutinizing the room numbers
on th e k eys a little closer now, since he
came across one tha t was presented half
a dozen times in a half hour by various
holders, just passing the k ey around.
Cigarette machines in Tampa, Florida,
are providing almost as much fun as the
dog races used to. All the brands are mi xed
up and a sr-gn posted said the company
was not responsible for which brand came
out. Some customers made a great gam·
bling gam out of it, betting on whi ch
brand would einerge, with the odds two to
one on mentholated cigarettes coming out
first. Mixing 'em up may be th e machine
operators comeback to th e folks who get
to the machin es and clear out the popular
brands at a crack.
